New York (ECN) - Maria Sharapova defeated Bulgarian tennis player Tsvetana Pironkova in an over powering performance.
The 22 year old Sharapova made quick work of 21 year old Pironkova in just 73 minutes in the first round of the U.S. Open.
The final match score at Arthur Ashe Stadium was 6-3, 6-0. Tsvetana's current ATP ranking is #98, but she made an easy opponent for the 2006 U.S. Open Champion Maria Sharapova.
Pironkova has never made it into the second round of a Grand Slam title. Sharapova's dominant victory came with just four double faults and five unforced errors.
The win was not unexpected, but the dominant fashion it came by was certainly impressive.
This came on the heels of Sharapova's less than stellar performances in Toronto. She has made a slow recovery after having underwent surgery to repair her shoulder and was sidelined for over nine months. This is just the type of victory she needed to show that she is back to her old self again.
