
Toronto (ECN)- Apple on Tuesday unveiled new computers in its iMac, MacBook and Mac Mini lines, which have managed to weathered the recession (Mac sales are up 17% last quarter). Apple has again refused to engage in price wars with product entry range.
“Apple is the multi-touch leader, pioneering the use of this innovative technology in iPhone, iPod touch and Mac notebook trackpads. Apple's Multi-Touch technology allows us to offer an easy to use mouse in a simple and elegant design,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing.
With falling prices started PC competitors such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard, analysts were expecting Apple to revises its rates. But no. The creator of the iPod and iPhone prefers to offer more features or power of its machines.
The most important change concerns the iMac line, with prices starting at $1,199. This all-in-one built around a flat screen measuring up to 27 inches, is being build with an Intel Core quad-core.
It will be sold with a "Magic Mouse", a new Bluetooth wireless mouse with the touch surface allows, like the iPhone, to use multiple fingers to initiate various actions. The body of the mouse has no mechanical button or scroll ball.
New laptops, including a MacBook, have also been presented with an intro price starting at $999.
The Mac Mini (from $500) has also been updated with more memory and faster processors.
“You can see that it’s working with the results that we’ve had,” Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, told Reuters on. Oct. 20. “We’re not interested in the netbook phenomenon of cheap and crappy and people that want to return it after a day or two. That’s just not who we are.”
