CRTC Asks Government Regulators To Prevent Traffic Shaping
Ottawa (eCanadaNow) - The largest association in Canada that represents most ISP’s in Canada and that has representatives across the nation has made a formal request.
The Canadian Association of Internet Providers has asked the Canadian Radio, Television and Telecommunications Commission to block Bell Canada from engaging in any more throttling or traffic shaping. They are asking the government to step in and stop the practice.
In recent weeks the practice of regulating bandwidth or throttling has taken on a huge significance. ISP’s and individual users are coming forward in droves with complaints about the practice.
As the provider of most of the Internet Bandwidth in Canada, and supplier to most of the small to medium sized Internet service providers in Canada, Bell Canada is being pressured to stop traffic shaping.
Bell Canada maintains that it is a harmless practice necessary to keep traffic moving smoothly. But many different customers of Bell Canada have reported that they are experiencing a loss of as much as 90 percent of their normal bandwidth and speed.
Canada Bell denies that such a slowdown exists, and if it does they say it is not from traffic shaping. There are currently new efforts at investigation of the issue, and the jury is still out as to the complete effects of traffic shaping.
One thing is for certain, however. Bell Canada is facing intense scrutiny and attention because of their throttling and Internet traffic shaping actions.
