Detroit (eCanadaNow) - Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been charged with perjury and obstruction of justice in relation to a sex scandal.

The mayor has been in the middle of a sex scandal since January.  The mayor, who is married, was caught by the Detroit Free Press sending text messages with his former chief of staff Christine Beatty.

The text messages revealed that the two were having a romantic affair.

Kilpatrick, according to prosecutors, contradicted sworn court testimony after text messages were discovered.

The testimony dates back a few months as Kilpatrick and Beatty both denied having a sexual relationship.  It is also stated that Kilpatrick restricted officers from fully carring out an investigation of his office.

Kilpatrick has vehemently been stating that he is completely innocent, but prosecutors were confident enough to charge the mayor.

He held a press conference on Monday stating "I look forward to complete exoneration.  This has been a very flawed process from the beginning."

Kilpatrick and Beatty have been asked tu turn themselves in by Tuesday morning by prosecutor Kym Worthy.
