The number two Republicane in the Senate, Trent Lott, has resigned after two decades of service in WashingtonBoston (eCanadaNow) - The number two Republicane in the Senate, Trent Lott, has resigned after two decades of service in Washington.

Lott stated from his home state on November 26th that he would resign by the end of the year.  The 66-year-old Lott officially resigned from the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.  He has been in the Senate since 1988.

Lott is the former Senate Majority Leader and apparently has many things in front of him which he still wants to do.

There are reports that he may be going into the lobbying business with a friend of his, former Sen. John Breaux.

A successor to Lott is going to be named by Republican Gov. Haley Barbour.  This successor will only be temporary until a special election is held next year to fill the spot and massive shadow Lott has left behind in the Senate and in the Republican party.
