New Orleans (ECN) - It appears that the city of New Orleans managed to avoid a major disaster as Hurricane Gustav did not pack quite as big of a punch as many expected.

Hurricane Gustav made landfall in Louisiana at around 11:15 on Monday morning, but was weakened to a Category 2 storm.

Its winds were at a top speed of 115 mph, as it moved inland and lost strength as it went.

A few hours later, its top winds were barely hitting 60 mph in many parts of Louisiana, including New Orleans.

It stayed far away from New Orleans to keep it from being hit directly.

Storm surges are still said to hit 10 feet though, as many continued to wait and see if the levies would hold.

It appears that there was not enough rain to actually cause any major flooding.

On top of that, the Republican National Convention seems to be back on schedule.
