There are still thousands of people trapped under houses, schools, and other facilities, so the death toll could easily raise to many more.

The 7.8 magnitude quake hit on Monday, causing an immense amount of destruction as waves pummeled the shore, along with aftershocks.

The epicenter of the quake was in Wenchuan country, a mountainous region of around 112,000 people.

In Beichuan, 80% of the buildings collapsed, while 5,000 people died in the Sichuan district.

People have been pulled out dead from schools, factories, houses, and more, and the numbers keep on growing.

The death toll is the highest for a quake in China since 242,000 people died when it was hit in 1976 with a huge quake.

The trains from Chengdu were all stopped on Monday, as was the city's airport.
