Commandoes reach room of mosque militant leader

The leader of militants holed up in a Pakistani mosque may have been killed or apprehended as security forces stormed his compound early Tuesday.

Islamabad (eCanadaNow) - The leader of militants holed up in a Pakistani mosque may have been killed or apprehended as security forces stormed his compound early Tuesday.

Hard-line cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi was speaking to a local news channel when forces apparently arrived at his location in the Red Mosque compound in central Islamabad.

"Commandos are at the door of my room," he told Aaj news channel, before the connection was lost. It was not clear whether he was arrested or killed.

A military spokesman said 10 militants had been killed in the assault on the mosque. At least two soldiers have also died as forces stormed the compound following failed overnight negotiations to resolve the week-long standoff.
