EU condemns Hamas-Fatah clashes, urges all sides to avoid civil war
Berlin (eCanadaNow) - The EU presidency Wednesday condemned "in the sharpest terms" the current fighting in the Palestinian territories between supporters of the Fatah and Hamas movements and urged all involved to avoid a descent into civil war.

The EU presidency was "deeply concerned" and condemned attacks by what it termed "illegal militias" on the Palestinian national security forces, Martin Jaeger, the spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said. Germany currently holds the EU presidency.

The presidency called on those involved in the fighting, in which more than 40 people have died in recent days, to observe the terms of the Mecca Agreement reached on February 8 this year.

The EU presidency expressed its continued support for President Mahmoud Abbas and for an Egyptian initiative aimed at ending the fighting.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier had phoned Abbas Wednesday, and Chancellor Angela Merkel would speak to both Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert later in the day, Jaeger said.
