Residents of Los Angeles were awakened by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake this morning. The quake came at about 4am today and was centered near the same spot that the 5.9 1987 quake was. Earthquakes have been hitting almost nonstop since New Years up and down the West Coast. So far, tremors have been felt in Alaska, Oregon, Hawaii, and of course California.
On the good side, there were no reports of significant damage or injuries as a result of this quake. Some experts are predicting that these frequent small quakes could mean a larger one with the potential for more damage is coming. Compared to the big earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, this 4.4 was a walk in the park, but it still shook bridges and building may have swayed a bit in Downtown Los Angeles.
Time magazine has predicted Los Angeles to be next major city to be hit with devastating quake based on geological record. In truth, Los Angeles has been pretty quiet in recent years as earthquake activity goes. There are always small shakes and quakes, but residents usually sllep through, or don’t even notice these. Time will tell if these small quakes might lead to something larger in the near future.
