All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 are closed in Ajax, east of Toronto, following a fatal accident involving six vehicles.

According to reports, two adults and a 12-year-old child are dead while 11 more are in hospital with injuries ranging from serious to life-threatening after a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Ajax on Friday night.

The coroner was called to the scene.

“This is a significant collision, a big scene,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), at least two trucks were involved. An SUV was trapped between two heavyweights.

The accident occurred before 7 am near the Westney road. The police investigation to determine the cause.

“Based on the severity of the damage it would be fair to say one of these transport trucks did not stop in time,” said Schmidt.

The affected section of Highway 401 east to Ajax (Westney Road in Salem) should be closed until noon, according to the OPP. The accident also causes delays on the 401 West in the sector.
