NASA Closley Watching Apophis Asteroid

Apophis, a 900 foot asteroid, may pose a real threat to Earth in April 2036. While this asteroid has come close to earth before and will again in December of 2012, the April 2036 date presents the greatest risk.

At that time Apophis will come closer to earth than many of the satellites that are currently in orbit.

NASA has stated that there is a 1 in 250,000 chance that the asteroid could hit the earth at that time. Very high odds they said, but apparently not high enough.

NASA has begun to work on ways to deflect the asteroid, including using the Deep Impact project, solar sails and laser beams.
