Sony announced Tuesday that it plans to sell over 2 million 3D television sets this fiscal year. In what electronic producers believe is the new “must have”, 3D televisions are set to hit the shelves this spring. Panasonic, in a way to jump the market, will be releasing their version of the 3D TV at the end of this week. Samsung will follow shortly after the Panasonic release.
Hollywood has had much success with 3D movies in the last few years and television makers want a piece of the action. A new Blu-Ray DVD is set to be released that will allow you to play 3D movies at home. Ventures are already in place to create 3D television networks to encourage the purchase of these types of sets.
Forecasters believe that 3D viewing will become so popular, that by 2015, over 75 million sets will be in use worldwide. This is the biggest change in viewing in the last 20 years. The new technology, if it catches on with the general public, could actually make the television sales industry profitable again. Sony has stated that its television division has lost money for the last 7 years straight. They believe that this one product could boot their overall profits.
