Google recently announced the planned release of 64-bit tablets and smartphones that use the Android L operating system. This is likely a move to catch up with Apple’s previously released 64-bit mobile devices. Some in the industry project the possible release date of the first devises to be as early as October, based on historical release data.
Google said that Android applications will run twice as fast on ART. ART is the run-time environment for Android applications. Games will look better using the 64-bit improvements and high-resolution video will be encoded and decoded more quickly. Intel has seen improved performance in data decryption and encryption,decompression and graphics during lab testing. The improvements in Android L should also improve battery life as well. Mobile devises will have up to 4GB of memory too.
The newer Venue 7 and Venue 8 have 64-bit chips and the 32-bit KitKat Android 4.4 can be upgraded to Android L.
Android will be in smartphones with Merrifield and Moorefield prcessors as well as tablets with the soon to be released Cherry Trail Atom chip. Android L also supports ARM’s 64-bit architecture. Linaro, and industry consortium, is also working on a 64-bit mobile Chrome browser version.
Since 64-bit processors are fast becoming the industry standard, it’s only a matter of time until someone comes up with an even faster way to process digital information on even more digital devises.
The Tegra K-1 chip, made by Nvidia, will also have Android L support in mobile devises to be released in the second half of this year. Qualcomm has also announced 64-bit ARM based chips. It’s unclear if those chips will have Android L support.
