Nancy Lieberman Named Coach In Mavericks System


Nancy Lieberman, the first woman to play pro basketball with men is now the first woman hired to coach them

Lieberman has been named the new coach of the Dallas Mavericks’ affiliate in the NBA Development League.

Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks’ president of basketball operations is responsible for hiring the hall-of-famer.

“She’s got the skins, the experience — she knows what she’s doing — so I certainly hope that we’re well beyond those issues,” Nelson said. “Besides, if you can’t respect authority, no matter what form or color it comes in, I don’t want you on my team.”

Lieberman is regarded as one of the greatest figures in women’s basketball.

In 2000, she was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame.

Lieberman is also a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
