Phil Mickelson has won the HSBC golf championship for a second time. The left handed golfer is ranked number 2 in the world. The tournament was played at the Shanghai Sheshan International Golf Club on Sunday.
Mickelson won over the Chinese population with his ready smile and willingness to sign autographs. The upbeat man brings a different sort of energy to the sport and the fans love it. Mickelson is constantly compared to Tiger Woods in the media. The Chinese have deemed Mickelson their favorite over the very serious Woods.
Mickelson was able to pull ahead of South African, Ernie Els at the 16th hole. Woods who played in the tournament for the first time since 2006, was no competition for Mickelson. Woods is currently the world’s number 1 player.
Mickelson has been a fan favorite in China and around the world. He has endured a tough year in his personal life. His wife and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the year. He is optimistic about his 2010 season. Mickelson stated, “I am excited about 2010 because I am starting to play the best golf of my career.” Mickelson will be taking the next three months off for the winter season.
