Mark McGwire Sorry For Steriod Use

The former first slugger for the St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland A’s Mark McGwire admitted Monday he had used steroids for over a decade.

“I wish I had never touched steroids. It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologise,” McGwire said.

McGwire used steroids for the first time a few times during the winter seasons between 1989 and 1990.

McGwire began to use the banned substance following a foot injury during the 1993 season.

He acknowledged on Monday that he always knew he would have to address the controversy that has surrounded him since retirement.

“I always knew this day would come. It’s time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected,” he said.

“I used steroids during my playing career and I apologise.”

“I’m sure people will wonder if I could have hit all those home runs had I never taken steroids,” he said. “I had good years when I didn’t take any and I had bad years when I didn’t take any. I had good years when I took steroids and I had bad years when I took steroids.”

McGwire admitted to looking forward to wearing a Cardinals uniform and to set foot on the field of Busch Stadium.
