A whites-only basketball league may sound like a joke, but it may soon become a reality in a dozen Southeastern cities.

Don “Moose” Lewis, a boxing and wrestling promoter from Georgia has announced plans to launch the All-American Basketball League.

In a throwback to the days of segregation, the league would require players to have parents that are both of full “caucasian” descent.

Lewis claims it has nothing to do with racism.

“”There’s nothing hatred about what we’re doing,” Lewis claims, “…people of white American-born citizens [sic] are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.”

He alludes to the recent scandal involving Washington Wizards player Gilbert Arenas, and perceives a difference between “fundemental basketball” and “street ball.”

“Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch? That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.”

The planned league has sparked an outcry, with Augusta’s mayor stating that, “I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city,”
