Dirty Hit? Boston’s Marc Savard Leveled (VIDEO)

Marc Savard, centre for the Boston Bruins, was leveled by the Penguins Matt Cooke and taken from the ice on a stretcher with 5:37 left in the game Sunday.

The Boston Bruins are left with a bad taste in their mouths after centre Marc Savard was blindsided by Matt Cooke in what they think should be an illegal hit. Savard suffered a head injury when he was struck in the head from behind by Cooke’s raised left arm and shoulder. He was temporarily unconscious but was able to move his arms and legs before he was carried off the ice.

To add insult to injury, the Penguins went on to beat the Bruins 2-1. This ended Boston’s five-game road winning streak.

The team feels that the hit was a dirty hit and that Cooke should have been penalized for the hit. The National Hockey League general managers are considering changing the rule for next season. The rule change would entail banning hits like Cooke’s.

“It’s pretty obvious that was definitely a dirty hit,” said Claude Julien coach for the Bruins, he went so far as to say that Cooke should be suspended. Cooke responded by saying he was finishing his check.

The team is hopeful that Savard will be able to return to the ice as early as today.
