Jose Reyes Temporarily Sidelined for Thyroid Issues

Jose Reyes, shortstop for the New York Mets, has been diagnosed with a hyperactive thyroid.

Earlier in the week Reyes had been pulled out of this week’s exhibition games because of something that showed up in blood test and required further examination; it has now been confirmed that there were signs in his blood work that lead to the diagnosis of a hyperactive thyroid. A hyperactive thyroid is a very treatable health problem as all that is needed is medication and monitoring.

Reyes will have further tests today in New York that could take up to 48 hours before any results are received. In the meantime, he has been advised to stay inactive. Doctors had cleared him to play last Friday, but team doctors decided to take a more conservative approach and have him sit out to be safe and allow for further testing.

Reyes agrees with being conservative stating, “We’re not talking about my leg, nothing like that, we’re talking about my health, so I have to be concerned about it.”

The thyroid is a gland that is located in the neck and is responsible for regulating metabolism. In the case of a hyperactive thyroid, it releases too much of the thyroid hormone causing weight loss, difficulty breathing, irregular heart beats, anxiety, heat intolerance, among others.
