Matt Schaub Loses Piece of Ear in Illegal Hit

Matt Schaub, the quarterback for the Houston Texans, had a rough game this Sunday. He was pitted against the Denver Broncos and Payton Manning, but the game took a strange turn in the third quarter when Schaub took an illegal hit from the Bronco’s Mays and lost a part of his ear, reports The Huffington Post.

The hit, with the crown of Linebacker, Mays, helmet, sent Schaub’s helmet flying off; taking a piece of his ear with it. Schaub was removed from the game for a single play while they attempted to stop the bleeding of his ear. He returned to the game once the bleeding tapered off.

The Texans went on to beat the Broncos 31 to 25. Schaub informed the press that following the game Mays stopped to apologize for the illegal hit and insisted it was nothing personal.

The Pittsburgh native drew praise for his toughness from not only his his teammates and coaches but his opponents as well.

“It shows his character and the type of leader he is, the type of guy that is reliable, that you can count on,” guard Wade Smith said. “He made a hell of a lot of plays today. He played a great game and was a big reason why we won.”

“It’s the ultimate compliment when your teammates feel that way about you,” Schaub said. “It’s just me being the quarterback. I’ve got to be out there every play and you’re going to get hit in this league and you’ve got to take it and go.”

Schaub insists he holds nothing against the linebacker and that football is, simply, a physical game were injuries can, and often do, happen.

“I felt fine. I just lost a piece of my ear,” Schaub said. “I was bleeding and my helmet came off so I had to come out for a play, but I was fine.”
