Three times as many people lose their lives in alcohol-related fatalities during the period between Christmas and New Year’s then comparable periods during other times of the year.

Forty percent of traffic-related deaths during this time involve, either directly or indirectly, a driver who was impaired by alcohol.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism warns that alcohol-related impairment affecting decision-making skills needed for driving can diminish quickly, even when an individual shows no overt signs of intoxication.

The NIAAA warns that alcohol is a stimulant and may produce temporary upbeat feelings, with an individual seeming to feel just fine, yet judgment can still be affected.

Higher levels of alcohol consumption can act as a depressant and cause those who chose to get behind the wheel to react slowly and possibly pass out or fall asleep behind the wheel.

Many cities offer free taxi service during the holidays.

Fifty seven year old actor David Hasselhoff, who starred in ‘Baywatch’ and ‘Knight Rider,’ is in the hospital. It was reported that his daughter Haley, 17, took him to a hospital in Los Angeles on Sunday. Apparently the star has been battling a major alcohol problem during the last few years. This has landed him in the hospital fives times in as many years.

In this latest episode it was reported that he had been drinking alcohol during the previous three days before he was hospitalized. Hasselhoff has denied that he has any type of drinking problem. Friends reported that they expect Hasselhoff will continue to deny his drinking issues.

His legendary drinking binges are said to last for days. Last year he landed in the hospital twice due to his on-going drinking. Friends reported that the star lives in denial of his problem. His ex-wife, with whom he has a 20 year old daughter, was recently in jail for driving under the influence. Friends are concerned how Hasselhoff, and his former wife, Pamela Bach’s situation will affect the girls. It is said that it is a difficult situation, with the family, because the two drink their alcohol and they do not get along when they are together.

7-Eleven is launching its very own brand of beer for those beer drinkers on a budget, who cannot go without a brew or two. The name of the product is called “Game Day.” “Game Day Light” and “Game Day Ice” are going to be competing with the major brands such as Coors and Budweiser. How these two entries will fare will be interesting to follow.

They will sell for $8.99 for a 12-pack, which does not seem to give it much of a price edge. It is scheduled to be sold in 4,200 outlets across 17 states. 7-Eleven already markets its own wines which are doing well. The regular beer will be 5.5 percent alcohol, while the lighter brew will consist of 3.9 percent alcohol. The beer will be produced by a brewery in Wisconsin that produces beer it is contracted to produce. City Brewery in La Crosse Wisconsin is the brewery.

This comes at a time when beer sales have flattened somewhat, meaning beer is not recession-proof as previously though to be. It is an uphill battle. These types of beer have not often fared well against the major brands, which offer many discount bringing their prices down, close to those of the house brands.

Alcohol and cigarettes are two common vices for humans and it seems that another type of mammal as fallen prey to these habits.

Zhora is a Russian chimpanzee that was sent to rehab by his handlers in an effort to cure him of his drinking problem.

The ex-circus performer was transferred to a zoo in Rostov after he became too aggressive.

At the zoo, Zhora had fathered several baby chimps and even learned how to draw with markers.

Visitors at the zoo began giving the chimp alcoholic beverages and cigarettes as treats.

What started as a comical gesture grew into an addiction; to the point of Zhora screaming and pestering every passer-by for their booze. Preventive efforts of the zoo staff involved keeping him behind three rows of fences in addition to the simple request of “Do Not Feed the Animals.” However visitors still managed to throw the vices into the holding area.

The alcoholic chimpanzee was transferred to a facility in the city of Kazan, where he will receive rehabilitation treatment.

According to veterinarians, Zhora is currently suffering from “exhaustion.”

The zoo staff in Rostov blame the visitors for not understanding that vicious habits can damage an animal’s health.

“Men’s Health,” a popular men’s magazine offering advice on your health, sex, diet, relationships, and career, has released their most recent list of America’s most drunk cities. The list surveyed the 100 largest metro areas in the United States and ranked them from 1 to 100. The results were based off of various alcohol related statistics including DUI arrests per capita, frequency of binge drinking, alcohol related accidents and crime, and death rates from alcohol related events and liver failure.

According to the list, the ten drunkest cities are Fresno, California, Reno, Nevada, Billings Montana, Rivereside, California, Austin, Texas, St Louis, Missouri, San Antonio, Texas, Lubbock, Texas, Tucson, Arizona, and Bakersfield, California.

Surprisingly the new top 10 list omitted a few metro a cities which are normally among the top 10 in “Men’s Health’s” annual list. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which was number one a few years back, did not make the top 10 this year. Also, Buffalo, Chicago, Las Vegas, and New Orleans, which are normally considered large party cities, were also not among the top 10.

Some cities in the list that are among the least drunk were Boston, Miami, Salt Lake City, and New York City.

A full list is available through “Men’s Health” magazine.

Men’s Health Magazine has put together a list of the nation’s drunkest cities. The magazine is doing a piece for the March edition of the magazine about which cities are the most drunk and least drunk. The information compiled includes records of alchol-related car crashes and deaths, along with statistics about DUIs and drunk driving arrests.

Based on all of the information gathered, the drunkest city in the United States is Fresno, California. The rest of the top ten list is, in order:

The Top 10 Drunkest Cities, according to Men’s Health:

 1. Fresno, California
2. Reno, Nevada
3. Billings, Montana
4. Riverside, California
5. Austin, Texas
6. St. Louis, Missouri
7. San Antonio, Texas
8. Lubbock, Texas
9. Tucson, Arizona
10. Bakersfield, California

The Top 10 Least Drunk Cities:

 1. Boston, Massachusetts
2. Yonkers, New York
3. Rochester, New York
4. Salt Lake City, Utah
5. Miami, Florida
6. Newark, New Jersey
7. Durham, North Carolina
8. New York City, New York
9. Fort Wayne, Indiana
10. Manchester, New Hampshire

According to the list, there is a trend of the Western states of the country being more drunk than the Eastern states. In fact, the least drunk citiy in the nation is Boston, Massachusetts, and the less drunk cities were all located in the East, with exception to Salt Lake City, Utah. This is because there is a high number of Mormons living throughout Utah, including Salt Lake City, and they do not drink alcohol. Other least drunk cities include Yonkers, New York, Miami, Florida, and New York City.

Sometimes there are those news events that take place which are so bizarre that you wonder why some people engage in such stupid and idiotic behavior.

A good example of this can be seen South Dakota when state troopers arrested Marguerite Engle for having a blood alcohol level of .708.

What happened was a stolen van was spotted on the side of the road on December 1st. When officers approached the vehicle they found Engle passed out and behind the wheel of the vehicle.

After giving her a blood alcohol test it was determined that her blood alcohol level was nearly nine times that of the legal limit for South Dakota (which is .08) and is above the safe limit for safely consuming alcohol of .40.

Perhaps the most astonishing part of the story was that she was even alive. Levels of .40 are considered lethal.

“She was almost double that,” Meade County State’s Attorney Jesse Sondreal told the Daily News Thursday. “The BAC is almost incomprehensible.”

The highest blood-alcohol level previously recorded in South Dakota was .56, reports the Daily News.

To make matters even worse when Engle was out on bail she was found again in another stolen vehicle, with her passed out behind the wheel. The blood alcohol level of the latest incident is still yet to be determined.

What this shows is that some people engage in such irresponsible behavior that they take some of the most dubious honors, in the case of Engel hers is having the highest blood alcohol level ever recorded.

The color of the alcohol you consume may determine whether you end up with a hangover the next day. Research published by the Alcohol: Clinical and Experimental Research journal has revealed that dark colored wine and alcoholic drinks may lead to nastier hangovers.

The study involved, 95 adults aged between 21 and 33. They were given alcohol (enough to get them drunk) to drink for two nights. They had vodka on the first night and bourbon on the next. The researchers monitored their sleep patterns and asked them questions the next day, about the effects of the previous night drinking.

While both drinks caused some level of hangover, sleep deficiency and low rapid-eye -movement activity it was discovered that dark colored drinks aggravated these symptoms.

Drinks with light color such as gin, vodka, white wine seemed to cause less hangover effects the next day, as opposed to dark colored drinks like bourbon, brandy, spiced rum and red wine.

Researchers attributed the cause of these findings to the fact that drinks with a dark color contain up to 37-times more chemicals and toxins.

So, if you are going out to party or decide to take a few drinks before bed, you may want to beware of drinks spotting a dark look.

“There are far more toxic chemicals called congeners in the darker distilled beverages and wines than in the lighter colored ones,” explained Damaris Rohsenow, professor of community health at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University. “While the alcohol alone is enough to make many people feel sick, these toxic substances can add to the ill effects as our body reacts to them.”

The fight against drunk driving just received a boost in Georgia. A funeral home known as McGuire, Jennings and Miller recently announced an offer to discourage this season’s party goers from drinking and driving.

The program is tagged “Operation stop and Think” and its offers free funerals for those who plan to risk their lives driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs on New Year’s eve. The program kicks off on Monday, Dec 28 and ends at Thursday noon, Dec 31. Barry Miller who is one of the originators of the program says the program was designed to help people stop and think before they drink and drive.

To qualify for the free funeral offer, a person has to go to the funeral home, accompanied by their next of kin to sign the offer contract. The person has to present a valid license and then write letters to loved ones to explain why they plan to risk their life by driving after drinking on New year’s eve,

According to Barry, The program was designed to get attention. The aim is to get people to take time to think and then do the right thing. Barry’s family had lost a member who was a victim of drunk driving and so they designed the program so that others would not have to go through the same thing. So far, no one has signed for the offer since its inception 10 years ago. The question now is, will a free funeral offer tempt you to drink and drive this New Year’s Eve? You can call the Miller’s Funeral Home at 706-295-2412 or 706-291-0073.

A new study suggests that hangover symptoms are not as severe when drinking a light-colored alcoholic beverage compared to a darker-colored beverage. If you would like to avoid a hangover, stay away from bourbon and opt for white wine, vodka or other light colored drinks. A new study suggests that whisky, wine and beer all tend to cause more issues the next day than other drinks do.

There are many alcoholic beverages that contain by-products of materials, including woods casks and grains, which are used in the fermenting process. These byproducts are called congeners and are diverse organic molecules that have toxic effects. Bourbon has been found to have 37 times the amount of congeners than that of vodka. It has been published in the journal ‘Alcohol: Clinical and Experimental Research’ that darker drinks are very bad choices when it comes to alcoholic drinks and contain more chemical byproducts that lighter drinks.

To test this particular theory of colored alcoholic beverages, a study was conducted on 95 men and women. One the first night, the participants were given either vodka or bourbon to drink until reaching an alcohol level of .11. The following night, they drank the same amount of a placebo or non-alcoholic drink. Researchers found that even though those who drank the bourbon felt a lot worse than those drinking vodka, both groups of drinkers had similar levels of impairments with particular tasks.
