Nash appeared on the talk show wearing a black veil. After talking with Oprah for a bit, Oprah asked if she would be willing to remove the veil. Nash had no objections and stated she was much stronger now and did not care what people saw. When she removed the veil, Oprah explained to her that her face would be all over the media.

Nash’s face is extremely disfigured. She lost both of her hands, her eyelids, nose, lips and the bony structure of her middle face. Nash says she is not in any pain, and does not remember the attack at all. Her family has filed a lawsuit against the owner of the chimp for 50 million dollars, and the state of Connecticut for 150 million dollars.

Nash, who just turned 56, is still recovering at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. She is hoping to become a candidate for a face and hand transplant.

Cythia - I feel so sad for this woman and I hope that with time her treatment impoves. Why do people want to have wild animals in their homes? It is just like owning a tiger or lion. They are meant to be in their habitat, not in our homes.
People will never learn and I hope that the woman who owned the chimp, feels sorrow for what has happened.

It is one thing to have your nose and jaw removed, but at least to have vision left is something we al should have. No, now she is faced to live out the rest of her life this way and it is not fare.

Steph - Charla, The fact that after this tragic accident one of the first things that comes to your mind is your daughter’s prom and not anger toward your friend is an inspiration and an example of how strong and brave and beautiful you are inside and out. Dawn - wow…what an inspiration. i cannot believe what this woman has been through. my heart and prayers go out to that family. how are people able to be so inhumane to place some of these comments. its just horrible. i do blame the owner of the chimp and think there should be charges of some sort but my heart goes out to her as well at the same time, i’m sure it’s not what she ever expected and i couldn’t imagine living with what was done to a friend if that were my animal.

7.4 million Americans tuned in on Wednesday to watch Oprah Winfrey interview Charla Nash, the woman tragically attacked by her friend’s pet chimpanzee.

Nash is speaking publicly for the first time since she was attacked by her friend’s chimpanzee Travis in February 2009.

The 55-year-old had never revealed her face to the public until that point.

On February 16 this year Nash, 56, went to a friends house to help her get her pet chimp, Travis, inside after he had escaped.

Upon finding him Travis savagely attacked Nash leaving her in critical condition.

Nash has lost her nose an eyelid, lips and both hands during the attack. Due to an infection, doctors had to remove Charla’s eyes.

Currently Charla is still living in a hospital, when she moves around, she wears a veil over her face so that she does not scare people

Travis was shot by police following the attack.

According to Wikipedia, Travis’s head was taken too a laboratory for a rabies test and the body was taken to the University of Connecticut for a necropsy.[The body tested negative for rabies,but a Connecticut professor found the presence of Xanax in its system. Autopsy results in May 2009 confirmed the chimp was overweight and had been stabbed.  The remains were cremated at All Pets Crematory in Stamford on February 25, 2009.

The Nash family is suing Sandra Herold, the owner of the chimp for $50-million.

The attack occurred in February 2009 when Charla was assisting a neighbor with their 200 pound Chimpanzee. The Chimpanzee attacked Charla and ripped off the majority of her face.

Charla lost her nose an eyelid, lips and both hands during the attack. Due to an infection, doctors had to remove Charla’s eyes.

Currently Charla is still living in a hospital, when she moves around, she wears a veil over her face so that she does not scare people. She feels better about doing so she stated in her interview with Ms. Winfrey. Charla also stated that she doesn’t like to touch her face due to the fact that she truly doesn’t want to feel the extent of her injuries.

Charla’s family has filed claims against the state of Connecticut as well as the owner of the chimpanzee that attacked Charla.

The chimp named Travis that attacked Charla was shot and killed by police during the incident.

Nash, a native of Connecticut told Oprah that she feels almost no pain, but tries not to touch her face.

“I don’t ask a whole lot about my injuries… I know that I have my forehead,” she said. She now drinks her meals “with a straw through a small hole where her mouth used to be,” ABC added.

Nash says she wears the veil “so I don’t scare people. And sometimes other people might insult you.”

The 55 year-old woman was attacked by her friend Sandra Herold’s chimp because it felt protective of its owner and didn’t recognize Charla. However, Charla confesses she is not angry and just wants to forget about the terrible incident.

I don’t even think about it,” Charla told Oprah. “And there’s no time for that anyways because I need to heal, you know, not look backwards. I want to get healthy. I don’t want to wake up with nightmares.”

Nash is currently eating through a straw and continues to get treatment at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Her only hope is a complete face transplant.
