Canada’s version of “Black Friday” starts today in various Canadian cities but is also a day off for many to take part in ice hockey events throughout the country, one of them being the Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

In areas like New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Labrador and Ontario, stores are not open and the holiday is actually celebrated on December 27th.

Stores like Best Buy, Canadian Tire, Old Navy, Wal-Mart, Toys R Us and Zellers are having sales and discounts up to 70%. A few of these sales have already began at midnight while online retailers are taking up the holiday as well. Since many of these areas celebrate the holiday by having the day off, the best bet would be to shop online since there’s more to choose from like Red Flag Deals.com, Tiger Direct for computer and component related stuff and Amazon. Best Buy is also having some Boxing Day deals for the internet customers.

No matter if you’re a traditionalist or a modernized celebrator of great deals, Boxing Day is a fun day for all shoppers and the hard-working people who want to give back to the community.

Wishing You a Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas is a common greeting this time of year.

Around the world people celebrate this time of year, each with their own expressions.

It is generally accepted that the word Christmas itself is from the Old English Cr?stesmæsse, meaning literally “Christ’s mass”, which is the annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Many languages base their version of Merry Christmas on the word “nativity”, such as the Spanish greeting “Feliz Navidad”.

In Italy, you will hear “Buone Feste Natalizie”. Should you be in France, you will hear the beautiful greeting “Joyeux Noel”, while in Germany it will be “Fröhliche Weihnachten”. So many colorful ways to say “Merry Christmas”! According to santas.net, in Greece the greeting is “Kala Christouyenna”!

In addition to celebrating the birth of Christ, there is also the celebration that gives us St. Nick, who features prominently in many countries throughout the world.

Whether you call him Santa Klaus, Kris Kringle, or Father Christmas, he represents the giving spirit of this season for Christians and non-Christians alike. So no matter how you say it, in this wide world, it is wonderful that so many countries share this time of joy, uniting us every one. Merry Christmas to all!

Christmas Tree Tax?!?!?!

On Tuesday a U.S. tax was announced in the Federal Register for 15-cents per Christmas Tree.

In other words, real Christmas tree buyers would be paying an extra 15-cent tax on trees to pay for a new board which would have been tasked with promoting the Christmas tree industry.

Christmas tree growers across the United States were very much in favor of this tax as they would have been able to benefit from the marketing campaign created and funded by the tax.

The tax would have been 15 cents on each tree for producers and/or importers of fresh Christmas trees that they were to sell or import more than 500 a year.

Many criticized this new tax by the Obama administration indicating Christmas should not be taxed and this may be Grinch like.

Others were complaining the government should not be promoting or encouraging the support of fresh tree growers/sellers and not artificial tree companies.

Another complaint was the tax would most likely be passed along to the consumer. This caused administration to put the tax on hold.

White House spokesman Matt Lehrich told Fox News on Wednesday afternoon that the administration is putting a stop to the proposal.

“I can tell you unequivocally that the Obama administration is not taxing Christmas trees. What’s being talked about here is an industry group deciding to impose fees on itself to fund a promotional campaign, similar to how the dairy producers have created the ‘Got Milk?’ campaign,” he said. “That said, USDA is going to delay implementation and revisit this action.”

For years, many organizations have been crying out for Christmas greetings to be removed from Holiday festivities. Nativity scenes should not be displayed in towns; Christmas caroling should be removed from school including children’s Christmas pageants. Sales posters should not have the word “Merry Christmas” on them, and should only use the greeting “Happy Holidays” instead of the traditional “Merry Christmas.”

Well a recent poll across the US has shown that nine out ten American’s plan to celebrate the Christmas holiday. They are divided about businesses using an alternative slogan like “Season’s Greetings” in their ad campaigns. 44 percent were in favor of the change while 49 percent opposed, stating that respect should be given to all religious faiths.

One out of every ten American’s also stated that they have family members who also celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa.

So what is correct? Do we remove Christmas references from all Holiday festivities? This debate is far from over, but according to the poll, most Americans feel that no matter what religious holiday is celebrated, a person should have the right to display or use the greeting they choose without fear of not being politically correct.

Fans of the holiday classic “A Christmas Story” always look forward to the time of year as a sort of tradition.

The 1983 film, an adaptation of Jean Shepard’s memoir of a boy in the 1940s, was set in Indiana but largely filmed in Ohio. The movie starred Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker, a young boy determined to get a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas.

The film was a modest theatrical success, but critics loved it. It eventually joined “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Miracle on 34th Street” as a Christmas cult classic.

“It’s a film about being a kid and looking back,” said Brian Jones, who owns the house where the movie was shot and the neighboring museum dedicated to the film.

“It is unbelievable that a movie has touched the lives of millions of families,” said Phil Gillen, son of the late actor Jeff Gillen who played the movie’s worn-out Santa Claus.

What’s your favorite Christmas movie?

No matter how old you are, where you are shopping, watching TV or just listening to the radio, you are guaranteed every single holiday season to hear the classic, “The Christmas Song”. Despite the redundancy to cover this song roughly 400 different ways in many countries besides the U.S., the most famous version just about everyone knows and even likes the best, is the Nat King Cole version.

History of the song itself is interesting. “The Christmas Song”, or as it’s commonly subbed, “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire“ was originally written by Mel Torme and Bob Wells back in 1944. The subtitle for the song back at this time was “Merry Christmas To You”. Nat King Cole and Torme have both redone this song three times due to change of technology or in Cole’s case, a label dispute. 1961 was the first year that the song was recorded in stereo. Even after 60+ years, this song never loses its potency to bring some holiday cheer.
An elaborate hotel in Abu Dhabi has the most expensive Christmas Tree in the world. The price of the tree cost a total of $11 million. The hotel is the Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi. This hotel is known for its lavishness. They also have a marina, a heliport and a gold dispensing vending machine.

The Emirates Palace has been recorded in the Guinness World Records book for their expensive and lavish items. The most expensive Christmas Tree was just another addition. The tree is decorated with gold accents and has many gifts of jewelry and more.

The hotels general manager, Hans Olbertz, came up with the idea of the Christmas Tree because he said he wanted the hotel to do something new for this season.
