While Facebook is commonly thought of as only a way to interact with friends and is otherwise frivolous, it appears that law enforcement officials may use the social networking site as a new source of surveillance. On Tuesday, the US Department of Justice sent out a PDF that confirmed that they plan to use Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter as a new way to monitor individuals.

While it is not clear exactly how the government will track criminals on the social networking sites, many believe that they will use fake friend requests to gain information about their targets. Also, in the PDF that was released, the Department of Justice revealed that Facebook is quite open with the government when it comes to releasing information. On the other hand, Twitter has more of a reputation for only releasing information when an individual is facing legal proceedings.

This is obviously not the first attempt by the government to use the internet to follow criminals. In the past, the FBI has followed sexual predators online. This became evident during CBS’s “Dateline” segment entitled “To Catch a Predator” which invited sexual predators into a legal trap. This show was quite successful in putting criminals behind bars.

Two men have been charged with lighter sentences stemming from the October attack of a nun. Mr Lindeman and Mr. Wells were charged to lesser crimes then the 17 count indictment. They pleaded guilty to sodomy and burglary charges.

Judge Harold J. Rothwax of the State Supreme Court ruled over the precedings. Max Lindeman was sentenced for 10 to 20 years on charges of sodomy in the first degree. Harold Wells was charged with burglary in the first degree. He will be sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison. The 23 year old Lindeman and the 22 year old Wells got off easy for their brutal crime on a nun.

The two men lived together at 62 East 125th Street in Harlem. The attack also happened in Harlem at 456 East 116th Street at the Sisters of Charity covenant.

The 30 year old nun wishes to stay anonymous and does not want to take part in any more legal actions against the two men.

The terrible attack on October 10th left 27 crosses cut in the womans body. She was raped, beat, and robbed.

A crime like this should of had a much harsher penalty. Assistant District Attorney Linda Farnstein accepted the plea bargain.

A 26 year old New Jersey man is being held in Yemen. He is accused of killing a guard as he was trying to break out of a hospital.

Sharif Mobley was born and raised in Buena, New Jersey. He moved to Yemen about two years ago according to a previous neighbor.

Mobley was among a group of al-Qaida terrorist suspects taken into custody this month in part of a security move in the capital city of Yemen. He was brought to the hospital when he complained of being sick. He stole a gun from a security guard killing one and wounding one.

Mobley joins a growing list of Americans becoming al-Qaida terrorists. The last one being Jihad Jane who resided in Pennsylvania for many years. Colleen Larose had terroristic charges against her recently. Larose was also born in the United States.

Pleas come from Mobley’s father Charles Mobley stating is son is not a terrorist. Like any parent Charles claims it could not be his son.

Mobley is being held in Yemen on many charges. He is associated with the group that attempted the Detroit plane bombing. He is being charged with murder of a security guard and other pending charges.

Eight boys between the ages of fourteen and eighteen were shot Friday night after leaving a skating rink. The boys were not believed to have life threatening injuries but several remained in the hospital.

The shooting occurred in Gary, Indiana, which is about 30 miles from Chicago. The teens were attending a concert at the World of Skaters roller rink and may have been involved in a fight that started at the concert. The boys claim to have no idea why somebody would open fire on them. Police speculate the fight may have been instigated by the concert hype-man when he asked the groups to divide into East-side and West-side.

World of Skaters manager James Sisson was in the crowd when the shooting began. He had already broken up a fight in the venue as acting head of security. It is unclear if the fight that happened during the concert is related to the shooting.

There were more than 200 kids outside the roller rink when the shooting began. Police are not certain of the exact number of shooters, nor do they have any leads.

The roller rink has been closed temporarily for the weekend and has suspended any events that were aimed at those under the age of 21.

Convicted murderer Amanda Knox may get a chance to get out of the Italian prison she has been sentenced to for 26 years. Her family based in the United States has started the appeal process through their lawyers after the judge involved in the case released his reasons for the conviction this week.

Knox who is just 22 years old was accused of murdering her roommate in a violent act of rage. Knox has repeatedly denied being at the apartment when the murder happened. The judge in the case does not believe the murder was premeditated but was the result of a violent, sexual and erotic act being played out by Knox and her boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito. Sollecito was convicted in the murder as well, and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

A third person Rudy Hermann Guede, was also convicted in the murder in a separate trial. He was originally sentenced to 30 years but after the appeal process his time was cut down to just 14 years.

Lawyers are confident the appeal will be heard after reviewing the motivating evidence for the conviction. Knox’s lawyers hope to file the appeal by the end of this month.

Who says those on the wrong side of society aren’t willing to change and make an honest buck? It’s true, people can change.

This week in downtown Houston Texas, in the United Way building, a job fair for felons was held. It drew thousands who are now willing to follow the “straight and narrow.” The line for an opportunity to make an honest living, stretched for a few blocks and tied up traffic.

In the best of times it can be tough for convicted felons to be hired. It is more difficult now in these bleak economic times, when even a hard working honest person, with no jail record, cannot get in the front door for an interview.

About 3,000 convicted felons turned out at the event, called the Road to Re-entry Employment Fair. How many of these felons were hired is not yet clear. The money for this event came from the Economic Stimulus Funds. Who says that President Obama’s Economic Stimulus Bill goes only to the well-heeled and union members?

The organizers are thinking about organizing follow-up events. Organizers are also telling employers that there is a tax-credit involved for hiring those who have paid their debt to society.

Eight years after terrifying the Washington D.C. area, Lee Boyd Malvo is ready to apologize.

In 2002 Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allen Muhammad went on a three week killing spree in the Washington D.C. area that resulted in 10 deaths. These men came to be known as the D.C. snipers. These men caused everyday citizens to fear for their life as average citizens were being shot randomly.

One such victim was Louisiana resident, John C. Gaeta. He was shot in the neck in a parking lot outside of a shopping mall but miraculously survived. According to sources, the snipers had slashed Gaeta’s tires so that he would be sitting in his truck.

Recently Gaeta received something in the mail that he probably never thought he would receive: an apology. When Malvo found out that Gaeta survived the shooting he wrote him a letter of apology. The letter stated that he was remorseful and was grateful that Gaeta survived.

Gaeta admitted to detectives last month that he did in fact shoot Gaeta in the parking lot of the Hammond Square Mall, but he thought that he had killed him.

Gaeta, though thankful for the letters, doubts the sincerity of his remorse.

San Diego Sheriff William Gore informed the parents of 17-year old Chelsea King that a body had been found in a wooded park in San Diego County. Although an official identification needed to be made, for legal reasons, it was certain the body was that of the high school senior.

The body was found in a shallow grave. It had been covered with leaves and other debris. A searcher, looking for the straight-A student noticed something looking suspicous. This led him to the remains of the young girl. The devastated parents did not make further comments although they had earlier thanked everyone for the love and support they had been offered. They particularly thanked the officers and the searchers, some 1400 strong, who spent the weekend searching for King. Searchers had high hopes of locating the girl, but, as Gore stated, “This was our worst fear, that we would find her as we did today.”

A previously convicted sex offender, who served time for his offense, was arrested last Sunday. John Gardner 111 served five years in prison for molesting a 13-year-old girl. He is now charged for the murder of King, a student at Poway High School. The girl played the French horn for the San Diego Youth Symphony. She also competed on her schools cross-country team and volunteered in a peer counseling program.

Hazardous material crews and the FBI were both called to an IRS office in Ogden, Utah, about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. The crews were sent at 11 AM on Monday because of a suspicious package that was delivered to the office. The package left one worker leaving the building on a stretcher while others had to be placed in decontamination showers as a precautionary measure. The package allegedly contained a substance similar to white powder, and it was found inside an envelope that appeared to contain a letter or tax return.

The IRS said in a statement, “A local Haz-Mat team was dispatched and standard procedures for responding to such an incident were implemented. At this point we cannot provide additional details because we are continuing to assess the situation.”
There are rumors that the substance has not been deemed hazardous yet, but reports have not been finalized.

This is the second attack on an IRS office in recent weeks. In Austin, Texas, a man who had been feuding with the IRS crashed his small private plane into the building. The man was said to be in a dispute with the agency that had lasted several years.

After 1400 volunteers searched for 17-year-old Chelsea King along with law enforcement personnel, John Albert Garden, 30-years-old, has been arrested in San Diego County. The search centered around Lake Hodges where the teenager’s car had been located. According to police authorities physical evidence, linking Gardner to the case, had been found. Gardner was being questioned late Sunday evening and is behind bars on suspicion of murder and rape.

Gardner, a registered sex offender, is also now a suspect in a December 27 assualt on a female jogger from Colorado Springs, Colorado. This area is a popular regional recreation area with many running trails. Chelsea King had reported to her family that she was going out jogging the last time they saw her. Gardner is also being looked at in the disappearance of Amber Dubois.

Gardner is from Lake Elsinore. This is located 75 mles north of San Diego. He has previously been convicted for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14-years-of-age.

King is a straight-A student. She is a senior at Poway High School. She is a popular student which accounts for the large number of people who helped search for her over the weekend. Her parents are frantic as they try to find their daughter.
