Elizabeth Smart Testimony

Kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart began delivering her testimony in a Utah court room this morning. Smart was snatched at knife-point from her family’s home in a an affluent Salt Lake City neighborhood in June 2002 as the rest of her family slept peacefully.

Smart was held captive by the assailant Brian David Mitchell and his wife Wanda Barzee for nearly 10 months. The girl was raped repeatedly and forced to live as a second wife to Mitchell. Smart was eventually rescued and the trial delayed for nearly eight years due to Mitchell’s defense team and Mitchell’s own court room antics. Smart, who is currently living as a missionary in France, flew back to the United States to detail the horror that she suffered at the hands of Mitchell and Barzee.

Smart detailed for the court how she was chained to a tree and brainwashed, being given a new name.

“There wasn’t a 24 hour period that passed that I wasn’t raped,” Smart has said.

The estranged wife of Brian David Mitchell, Barzee  is charged with kidnapping and coercion of a minor with intent to engage in sexual activity for allegedly taking Smart to California from Utah, the Salt Lake City Deseret News reported.

The plea deal was referenced in a filing Monday by U.S. District Court Judge Dale Kimball, who said “Wanda Barzee will be arraigned and is anticipated to enter into a guilty plea pursuant to an agreement with the United States.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Utah declined to comment, as did other lawyers in the case. Elizabeth Smart’s father, Ed, also declined to comment at the request of federal prosecutors, but told Fox 13′s Ben Winslow: “We’re happy with what’s happening in the case.”

Barzee and Mitchell, were charged by the U.S. government in 2008.

On Nov. 30, Mitchell is to undergo a 10-day competency hearing on his federal charges.

Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her Salt Lake City, Utah, bedroom at the age of 14 June 5, 2002.  She was found nine months later on March 12, 2003, in Sandy, Utah, about 18 miles from her home, in the company of Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee,
