The issue of nuclear energy has become one that is hotly debated throughout Canada.

As many Liberals claim that the only way to have true disarmament is not to promote the use of nuclear technology for the production of electricity.

They will often claim that such uses could lead to the development of a nuclear weapon.

This was the case in 1974 when India tested a nuclear weapon with technology that Canada supplied to them for the production of electricity. Now, Stephen Harper is having talks with India about the possibility of the two countries sharing this technology again.

Underscoring the fact that this may allow Canada to once again begin selling different nuclear related materials to India. This is part of larger strategy that Harper has in place with the announcement in January that one of his main goals was to build stronger ties between India and Canada as far as the sale of nuclear technology is concerned.

This has raised many fears that India could once again use the technology to develop even more advanced weapon systems and the overall safety of India’s nuclear facilities.

With reports surfacing during the meeting that India’s nuclear facilities were put on high alert because of possible terrorist threats against them.
