There have always been a lot of recalls in the toy business, and this year is no different. There are plenty of large companies that have put out major toys, later to find problems with them that need dire attention.

Build-A-Bear has recently placed a recall on Teddy Bear Swimwear because of a possible hazard with strangulation. This is nothing new, as these suits usually have small parts.

Battat has also had an important recall recently. On November 2, they decided to place a recall on their popular Magnetic Sketchboards. It seems as though the magnetic pen tip can pose a choking hazard in young children.

Most shocking of the recalls is likely the Kiddieland incident, involving the Disney-branded Fairies Plastic Trikes. There seems to be a risk of laceration that could occur from the improper use of the toy.

Just a month ago, certain dolls were also recalled by the Pottery Barn, mainly due to strangulation.

As these are nothing new, it is still important to bring these toys in for a refund to prevent any kind of dangerous situation.

IKEA Issues Massive Recall on Baby Cribs

Retail chain, IKEA, has issued a massive recall in the United States and Canada for their SNIGLAR cribs. It has been reported that there is a defect in the product, that causes the mattress to collapse, which could put a child at risk for entrapment and/or suffocation.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that the four main bolts that support the mattress are not long enough and appear to be the cause of the collapsing. There have been no reports of death or injury, so far. An estimated 26,000 SNIGLAR cribs have been recalled, sold between October 2005 and June 2010, at IKEA stores in North America.

If you purchased a SNIGLAR full-sized crib, model number 60091931 (the model number can be found on the mattress support label), take a look at the mattress support bolts. Check to see if the bolts extend through the nut. If you can clearly see the bolt sticking through the nut (at least two threads), then your crib is fine. But if you cannot see the end of the bolt, that means they are too short and need to be replaced, stop using the crib immediately.

For a free repair kit, contact IKEA at 800-661- 9807 (Canada) or 866-966-4532 (US), visit www.ikea.com for more details.

A voluntary Tylenol recall by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, which is part of Johnson & Johnson, includes Tylenol upper respiratory products, Tylenol Arthritis Pain and Tylenol 8 Hour. The recall also covers specific lots of the products Benadry, Sinutab and Sudafed for a total for 47 million units of the products.

The Tylenol recall was done with consultation from the Food and Drug Administration as a precautionary measure because of cleaning procedures that are considered to be questionable. There have not been any reports of adverse health effects and none are expected. The products under the recall came out of Fort Washington, PA prior to April of 2010 during a time when the production at the plant was stopped.

The latest Tylenol recall is not expected to involve those that purchase the product since it is at the wholesale level.

Ford Motor Company is recalling 575,000 Windstar minivans due to rear axles that can corrode and eventually break.

The vans affected by this recall are from 1998 to 2003. The states involved are: Canada, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
If you think you may be affected by this recall, take your vehicle to the nearest Ford dealership to have it inspected.

The NHTSA said that the reason for the deterioration on these vehicles is because of the road salt. If a crack has been determined, Ford will repair this and offer alternate transportation for you. If there isn’t any cracking, Ford will put reinforcement brackets on the axle in case any future cracking could occur. This will prevent any safety issues that may arise because of this.

Sally Jackson Cheese, a Washington based company, has issued a voluntary recall on some of its cheese products. The recall comes after several Minnesota residents became ill a short time after consuming the cheese.

The culprit is believed to be the company’s artisanal cheese, which is made from raw milk.

After testing eight people in Minnesota, it was determined that they each had the same strain of E. coli O157:H7.

It was reported that people in Oregon as well as the state of Washington became ill, also with the same strain of the bacteria. Each can confirm that they had consumed cheese, but only two could confirm that it was the Sally Jackson brand.

E. coli can cause flu like symptoms along with diarrhea and has the potential to cause organ failure, leading to death.

The Volkswagen of America recall affects 228,000 vehicles in multiple models and from many years. Affected are the 2007-2009 Volkswagen Golf, Jetta, Jetta Sportwagen and Rabbit, and the 2006-2010 Volkswagen New Beetle cars. VW has said that all of the vehicles, other than the New Beetle, have a small tab in the windshield wiper fluid area that could rub a fuel line and cause leaks that may lead to fires.

Chrysler’s recall affects 367,000 minivans, including the 2008 Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan. In these vehicles, a water leak near the heating and air conditioning drain could cause the air bag warning light to activate and accidentally deploy the device.

Honda Recall In Over 1-million cars

Honda has recently announced that it will recall nearly 1M of its Fit subcompact cars in cars in America and Japan, as well as an additional 375,000 Jazz units in Europe.

According to Reuters, the vehicles, all produced between November 2001 and October 2007 were produced at a plant located in Japan and are reported to have experienced faulty wiring in the headlight units of the cars. Although there have been no reported accidents or injuries due to the defect, Honda has issued the recall as a matter of prevention.

The recall is expected to cost the company more than $50M in repairs.

The USDA has announced a recall on Campbell’s SpaghettiOs.

The products affected by the nationwide recall are the 14.75 ounce cans of SpaghettiOs with meatballs, product code “U5”; SpaghettiOs A to Z with meatballs, product code “4N”; and the SpaghettiOs Fun Shapes with meatballs (Cars), product code “KS”.

The process of producing SpaghettiOs requires the individual components to be cooked separately. Then, the sauce, meat and noodles are combined, canned and sealed. The cans are then run through a giant cooker where they are heated to what is called “commercial sterility.”

According to the USDA, commercial sterility, also called shelf-stability, is when the cans are free of microorganisms, like bacteria, that could cause spoilage.

The cooker in the Paris, Texas plant that produced the product was found to not be reaching temperatures to guarantee commercial sterility. The company was uncertain when the cooker malfunctioned.

In a statement, Campbell’s spokesperson Anthony Sanzio said, “If there was spoilage, it would be very noticeable to the consumer. The can might be bloated, or there would be a foul odor when opened.”

The recall affects over 15 million pounds of SpaghettiOs manufactured between December 2008 and June 2010. Cans affected in the recall will have “EST 4K” printed on the bottom of them. They also have use by dated of June 2010 and December 2011.

Now It’s Chrysler

Chrysler has added a second round of recalls covering two of their most popular models. Less than a week ago, their first recall covered about 25,000 Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass vehicles, plus more that were sold outside the United States, for potentially sticky gas pedals. They were built in 2008 and 2009.

This new recall is much bigger and covers two separate problems affecting over half a million vehicles. Over 300,000 Dodge and Chrysler minivans sold both in the US and worldwide are affected, with an improperly routed wire harness that could rub against the sliding door, causing a short circuit. This is a potential fire hazard.

A separate issue covers over 300,000 Jeep Wranglers built between 2006 and 2010. The problem here is the front inner fender liner could rub against brake lines, possibly causing a leak that could affect braking power, and cause a crash.

Chrysler has apparently learned from the Toyota debacle. It quickly announced the recall affecting gas pedals made by CTS Corp, the same maker of the Toyota gas pedals, after receiving complaints from four drivers that the pedals did not return to idle position after being released. CTS continues to deny any problems.

Maytag, a division of Whirlpool appliances, is recalling 1.7 million dishwashers due to a dangerous fire hazard. The dishwashers have a faulty heating element that can potentially short circuit, resulting in a fire. 12 reports have been received about fires starting because of the heating element. There have been no injuries as a result of the fires. . The recall asks consumers to turn off the power source either at the breaker box or by removing the fuse if necessary.

The recalled dishwashers were sold between February 2006 and April of 2010. Whirlpool states they will repair the dishwashers in the consumer’s home or give a 150 to 250 dollar rebate towards the purchase of a new Maytag dishwasher. The defective dishwashers have been sold under a variety of different brand names. Amana, Jenn-Air, Magic Chef, Admiral, Performa and Crosley are listed in the recall. Consumers can visit the Maytag website to check serial numbers involved in the recall.
