Canadian telecommunications company Telus Corp. has announced plans to began constructing a new wireless network at the end of 2011.

Telus will design the network using the Long Term Evolution standard (LTE). LTE and other standards are partially or wholly built on 4G specifications. 4G wireless protocols offer higher data speeds and wider coverage compared to the existing 3G networks.

The LTE network will use an advanced wireless services section of the spectrum purchased in a 2008 auction run by the Canadian government. Deployment in major Canadian cities is expected to begin sometime in the second half of 2011.

Rural Canadian customers will probably not be able to use the LTE network until 2012 at the earliest. Telus will be attempting to buy lower frequency sections of the spectrum in a government auction in 2012. Whether they are able to or not will determine how widely their LTE coverage expands.

Telus and Bell previously deployed a HSPA+ network in 2009. HSPA+ is considered to be 3G or 3.5G. The company declined to comment about a possible partnership for the LTE network’s deployment.

Telus combined with Bell and Rogers Communications currently control roughly 95 percent of Canada’s market for wireless services.

Telus Mobility, has just disclosed that the company plan to release Apple’s iPhone 4, at the end of July, on the 30th. Telus Mobility is one of Canada’s Largest phone carriers. Telus plan on releasing the latest iPhone, on the same day as their chief competitor, Bell Mobility. Another of Canada’s leading phone operators, Rogers Wireless, hasn’t announced a release date, at this time. There is said to be no availability to pre-order the phone in Canada.

Apple’s latest iPhone 4, was released in America, on June 24th through AT&T Wireless. The latest iPhone is similar to it’s previous model, but with substantial upgrades. Battery life is longer lasting, and touchscreen display is enhanced. The iPhone 4 features a 5 megapixel camera with flash, and has a new frontal camera for video chatting.

Controversy over the Apple iPhone, that has been brewing in America, is also addressed in The Canadian release. In the latest model of Apple’s iPhone there is said to be a defective antenna, which causes the phone to lose signal strength, when holding the phone in a particular way. The phone apparently also had problems with an exaggerated signal strength display on AT&T’s network. Software has been developed to help the problem. Steve Jobs, The CEO of Apple, has allowed the company to go forward with the Canadian release of the phone.

There is going to be an inclusion of free bumper cases. These bumper cases, sell for $30. They do not cover the face or back of the iPhone. They only cover the sides of the phone, which is where the antenna is located. These cases
have been proven to help alleviate the problems associated with the iPhone’s antenna.

Despite the controversy, Apple fans should be lined up in a similar fashion to that seen in America for the innovative company’s newest smart phone.

Telus launches Motorola Milestone

As if the smartphone industry had not gotten any bigger, Telus Communications have announced that they will soon release the Motorola Milestone, their answer to the iPhone and Google Android. As a matter of fact the Motorola Milestone will be run by the same technology as the Android and will be released in Canada.

The Motorola Milestone is the current talk of the town of smartphones in the Great White North.

While the official release date of the Motorola Milestone is set for February 18th, it should be a while before the phone is available worldwide. As a matter of fact, Best Buy is already touting the Motorola Milestone in their flyers and store as a product that will be ‘coming soon’.

The Milestone will come with the Google Android 2.0 operating system and will have other smartphone amenities. Some of the things that will be with the Motorola Milestone are the QWERTY keyboard, digital camera, and WIFI and Bluetooth technology. It also comes with a 3.7 inch interactive screen.

The price of the Motorola Milestone is just about average with other smartphones that on the market. With a three year plan, you can look to pay $199 for the phone and usable service. Buying the phone outright will run the consumer about $549. These prices are sure to drop once the product is on the market and purchased by consumers.

The Motorola Milestone is available at Best Buy and any other Motorola outlets. Another avenue to the smartphone phenomenon.

Move over Rogers’, your no longer the only HSPA network in town. Bell announced the grand opening of its new high-speed wireless network on Wednesday November 4th. This greatly anticipated announcement along with the announcement expected today from Telus for a sister network, will provide choices between network providers previously unavailable to the public.

The Bell and Telus companies worked in conjunction to build a superior network for their wireless customers. Customers can expect excellent, uninterrupted service for their Smartphone’s. For people who have iPhones and want to be on a true 3G or 4G network, consider the new high-speed networks available to you. Both companies allow customers to choose from a 3G HSPA or 4G LTE network. Which in simple terms means you will have coverage in a larger area along with virtually instant file transfers, as well as any other online activity. If you are already Telus or Bell customers you are in luck! Both Bell and Telus are offering upgrades to their existing customers.

“This technology evolution is a win for Canadian consumers,” Darren Entwistle, Telus president and CEO, said. “Telus’s investment in next generation wireless services will give our clients more wireless functionality including international roaming, fast network speeds and a compelling selection of globally-compatible handsets and devices. As the next evolution in our multi-network strategy, this initiative will position Telus to actively participate in the future global LTE eco-system and leverage economies of scale, offer timely access to handsets, and enhance global roaming relationships and revenues.”

Bell and Telus are on the right track to a very promising future in the wireless market.

According to the Montreal Gazette, Telus Corp, in what is being called a long overdue move, is cutting the system access fee from its service plans. It will also drop the service charge for 911 calls

The $6.95 charge has long been seen as a cash grab by consumers who will benefit from the removal of the fee. Although cellular plan charges are going to increase by $5.00 come November 5th, consumers will still see a savings on their bills.

This move will mean that Bell Canada will be the only cellular carrier to retain an access fee. Telus customers have long reviled the charge as a money grab by the cellular company to pad its profits by charging the fee. Telus is the first of the three Canadian cellular carriers to completely drop the fee. Rogers ended its access fee, but added a regulatory recovery fee which was meant to recoup the lost revenue.

Telus will be offering the new plans to its existing customers who will have a choice of switching to the new plan, called the Clear Choice plan, or continuing with their current coverage and continuing to pay the access fee.

Analysts are concerned that the move will end up in cutting into the telecom companies revenuess, but the potential for an increased consumer base from customers switching from their old plans to Telus’ new offerings is seen as a positive potential.

The iPhone has boosted the results of Rogers (T.RCI.B) in the third quarter, a performance that may be difficult to repeat after the launch of the popular device by Bell and Telus next month.

Bell And Telus Take Piece Of Canadian iPhone Market

“The winds will blow soon,” said Jonathan Allen of RBC Capital Markets, shortly after the publication of the results of Rogers yesterday morning.

The Ontario-based company saw its sales and operating profit rise by 2% and 6% between July and October, above analyst estimates. They are, however cautious, now that the exclusive arrangement between Rogers and Apple – the manufacturer of the iPhone – is completed. Bell and Telus will launch next week a new common HSPA network, enabling them to offer more smartphones. The two companies will begin selling the iPhone in November, which will eat away a portion of sales of Rogers.

Moreover, two new suppliers – Wind (Global) Public and Mobile – will launch a wireless service before the end of the year. The increased competition also affect the market shares of Rogers by Jonathan Allen.

An Uphill Climb

For now, the results announced yesterday by the Toronto company pleased the market. The title of Rogers Communications rose 5.4% on the Toronto Stock Exchange, to close at $ 30.46.

The group posted revenue of $3.03 billion in the third quarter from 2.98 billion a year earlier. Profits fell 2% to 485 million (79 cents per share). Excluding certain non-recurring items, earnings per share totaled 82 cents, however, significantly more than the 54 cents expected by analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), for its part, has reached 1.18 billion, some 100 million more than the estimate made by Philip Huang, the firm UBS.

“These results show a healthy balance between growth, control costs and increase margins,” saidNadir Mohamed, President and CEO of Rogers.

Wireless

The share of turnover derived from the wireless was up 2% during the quarter to 1.76 billion.

In the current recession, customers are less used their devices to talk to and during their journeys.

In contrast, the use of data transfer – to surf the Internet or send text messages has exploded by 46% during the quarter to 372 million.

Rogers has sold some 370 000 smartphones during the quarter, about half were Apple iPhone.

In the cable sector, which includes television, internet and telephony residential sales increased 7% during the quarter to 773 million.

The media sector has meanwhile saw its revenues decline by 6%, to 364 million..
