The Chris Hemsworth starrer brought in $66 million in its debut weekend making it the third highest ever debut for a Marvel movie falling behind only “Spider-Man” and “Iron Man”.

Last week’s number one finisher dropped to second. “Fast Five” earned $32.5 million this weekend for a ten day total of almost $140 million. Two more new releases took the third and fourth spots.

The romantic comedies “Jumping the Broom” starring Anglea Bassett and “Something Borrowed” with Kate Hudson and John Krasinksi grossed $13.7 and $13.2 million respectively.

Finally rounding out the top five, plummeting from second, was the animated movie “Rio” which brought in $8.2 million in its fourth week.

Thor Debuts at No.1

The movie revolves around Thor, a powerful and arrogant warrior whose reckless actions begin a war. As punishment Thor is sent down to earth by his father to live among humans.

Thor is being played by “Star Trek” star Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddelston will star as his nemesis Loki. Natalie Portman will play Thor’s love interest, Jane Foster. Also cast in “Thor” are Robert De Niro, Jude Law, Jaimie Alexander and Colm Feore. Production is set to begin in January for a release on May 20, 2011.

Hopkins will next be seen starring alongside Benicio Del Toro in “The Wolfman” in February.
