In what appears to be a non-isolated incident, a man posing as a maintenance worker appeared at a North Vancouver hotel where he was able to dupe a hotel manager into calling the rooms of more than two dozen guests and convincing about six of them to activate the hotel’s emergency sprinkler system, causing thousands of dollars in damage to their rooms.

The incident was just one of several similar events that occurred over the weekend. Although police authorities had posted signs at the hotel regarding the incident, the prankster was able to convince several more guests to activate the sprinkler systems. Other businesses, such as McDonald’s, A&W, and Denny’s, received similar calls over the weekend, getting employees at those establishments to activate their sprinkler systems as well.

Police are investigating whether the calls originated from a single individual or whether more people are involved. It is believed that the pranks are related to an Internet website, believed to be called PrankNet or PrankU.

Similar incidents have reportedly taken place in the greater southeastern US, California, and Nebraska. At a Kentucky Fried Chicken location, employees were reportedly convinced to urinate on one another after being told that doing so would neutralize a toxic chemical that had been released through the store’s ventilation system.

The calls are believed to have originated from the United States.

Have you ever heard expecting mothers trying out names for their soon to be born baby? Now you have the chance to take part in this exciting little game, without all the difficulties of labor pains and late night feedings! First though, you may need to brush up on your knowledge of the Inuit language.

The Vancouver Aquarium is holding a contest to name its newest baby beluga, which was born at the Aquarium on June 7th. The Aquarium is seeking names in the native Inuit language of Inuktitut to show respect for the rich history between the belugas and the Intuits.

Start trying out those Inuit names and be sure to have them submitted by November 22nd. Judges with the Aquarium will pick the top five names and then turn these five names over to the general public to vote upon. The winner will be announced on December 5th.

In addition to knowing you have named an amazing creature, the winner will also receive a one on one meeting with the beloved beluga, an annual family membership to the Aquarium and a $200 gift certificate to the Aquarium’s gift shop.

Good luck thinking about those baby names!
