A line of jewelry by Miley Cyrus has been pulled from Wal-Mart stores for being toxic. Cyrus, 17, had partnered up with Wal-Mart to create a line of bracelets and necklaces with fashion designer Max Azria. Cyrus and Azria also have a line of clothing for the discount superstore.

After investigations about the jewelry’s safety began back in December, it was discovered that the jewelry line had high levels of metal cadmium. Long exposure to cadmium can cause kidney failure, softening of bones, and can even affect the brain development of young children. The high levels of cadmium were found in February, but the line of jewelry was still being sold until April 9.

While the jewelry is only toxic if ingested, many fans of Cyrus are as young as 5 years old. The likelihood that the jewelry could be put in a child’s mouth is too great to continue carrying the line in stores.

Cyrus is the teenage star of Disney’s hit television series “Hannah Montana” as well as several movies, including the “Hannah Montana” movies and her latest, “The Last Song”. Cyrus is also a pop music singer, and her father is country music star Billy Ray Cyrus.

Food banks and other organizations are straining under the large amounts of people seeking aid, such as food stamps and other vitally needed help. Not just the poor, but those who once had jobs and are out of work need help. The organizations are short and Wal-Mart, though always a contributor, is ramping up its aid to $2 billion over the next 5 years.

In addition to contributing funds and goods to these “good Samaritans” helping others, Wal-Mart is contributing expertise in the guise of logistical help, such as refrigeration units. These products help food last longer with less going to waste. At least $250 million will go into this logistical sector.

There are those critical of Wal-Mart saying that they just want to keep up with competitors in the food industry who are making large donations. One of these companies is the food giant Kroger Company. Wal-Mart is the best in logistics when it comes to its delivery and warehouse procedures. The expertise used will be shared with organizations helping them to improve their efficiency. Once in a while some good news concerning Wal-Mart is released, instead of the negative publicity it seems to attract. Wherever the help comes from will be appreciated by those in need.

Wal-mart has settled for $27 million a case in which workers for the company in California were accused of dumping hazardous chemicals.

According to the charges in the case, in April 2005, an employee of the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health saw a Wal-mart employee pouring bleach down a sink drain. According to the suit, that type of behavior was often repeated at 236 different California Wal-mart stores. According to the judgment in the suit, the store will now pay for its actions and attempt to improve its environmental policies.

Wal-mart will pay $20 million to environmental agencies and prosecutors, $3 million for supplemental environmental projects benefiting prosecutors, investigators and regulators, $3 million to ensure the store stays in compliance with environmental standards, and $1.6 million for legal fees.

District Attorney Steve Cooley says he hopes the settlement will ensure “Wal-Mart obeys the laws when shipping potentially hazardous materials on our streets and highways. Safety should always be the number one priority for the hundreds of thousands of people who travel California’s freeways every day.” Cooley said he was glad the store “had actually made improvements before the trial.”

Phil Harris, Wal-mart’s Vice President of Environmental Compliance, said plans were already in place to improve “training programs, policies and procedures. We’re a better company today as a result of these programs. And we’ll continue to look for opportunities to make our environmental compliance programs even stronger.”

Wal-Mart has agreed to pay $27.6 million dollars to settle a case which stated that the company had illegally dumped hazardous wastes at its stores in California. The allegations have led the company to change certain proceedures throughout the company.

According to San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, Wal-Mart had been improperly dumping waste at each of its 236 Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club establishments throughout the state. The settlement puts an end to a 5 year investigation which involved 20 prosecutors and 32 environmental groups that stated that the company was in violation of environmental laws.

Some of the chemicals that Wal-Mart had illegally disposed of were paint, aerosols, fertilizer, and pesticide among others. One case that Dumanis brought to light was that of a boy playing in a pile of fertilizer at a store in Solano County in the home and garden section. Fertilizer contains ammonium sulfate which is known to be a huge irritant to the skin, eyes, and repiratory tract. While Dumanis said that the company should be noted for stepping up to the plate, Wal-Mart also is facing the possibility of civil lawsuits. They also have pending federal cases concerning waste in Missouri and Washington, D.C.

While employment based lawsuits are nothing new, it appears that the world’s largest retailer and one of the world’s largest employers is facing one of the largest employment based lawsuits yet. Earlier this week, the 9th Circuit court voted in favor, by account of 6 to 5, that a lawsuit against discount retail giant, Wal-Mart Stores, could proceed.

The latest lawsuit against Wal-Mart is a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit, which has been raised by only six employee’s of Wal-Mart, claims that the company discriminates against women. The representation for Wal-Mart has claimed that the six women who are suing the company do not provide an accurate representation of the entire female workforce that the company employs.

The class action lawsuit was first filed against the company in June of 2001. At the time, the six women claimed that the retail giant was discriminatory against women in several different situations, including pay, training, promotion opportunities, and giving out jobs.

While this lawsuit may seem like a big deal, it does not appear to be too much of a concern for shareholders of the company. Shares of Wal-Mart’s stock remained fairly flat on Monday despite the decision that the suit could continue.

Christians around the world consider Easter to be a very important holiday. Many Christians place its value right up there beside Christmas. However, retailers do not consider it to be as holy, and most will remain open throughout the Easter holiday. Most businesses will only be closed for one day out of the year, and that day is Christmas.

Easter is observed as the resurrection of Christ. It is often celebrated with feasts and special church services. Each denomination has their own beliefs and practices that are carried out in the weeks prior to the actual Easter holiday, as well as the day itself.

Easter Sunday is a big money making day and retailers, restaurants, grocery stores and movie theaters capitalize on the holiday. Mom and pop businesses are more likely to close so they can spend the day with their families.

Thousands of Wal-Mart stores across the country not only remain open on Easter, but hold special Easter egg hunts in their stores. This helps drive sales to their stores as well as win points within the community. Eggs, toys and various other prizes hidden inside plastic eggs are scattered throughout the stores. Wal-Mart also sponsors several egg hunts in numerous communities.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ – The shoppers of one New Jersey Wal-Mart store got more than they bargained for on the weekend of March 13, 2010 when they were were greeted by a voice over the store’s public address system.

“Attention Wal-Mart customers, all black people must leave the store now.”

The store’s manager delivered an almost instant apology over the store’s PA system and was uncertain at the time whether the derogatory announcement had been made by a customer or disgruntled employee. The store has in excess of 20 PA accessible phones, not all of which are camera monitored. This did not prevent angry customers from expressing their concern to the store’s manager.

The public has had mixed views of the incident. Some Wal-Mart customers have talked of a temporary boycott while others refuse to be bothered by the incident.

A March 19th arrest was made of a male subject. The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office will be holding a news conference on March 20th to address the incident. The announcer’s name has not yet been released.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Ashley Hardie says the incident was “unacceptable”, and the Bentonville, Arkansas, company is now seeking ways to better secure its PA systems.

Something insane happened at a Wal-Mart store in New Jersey. As if the company did not have enough lawsuits and is already distrusted by some minorities; something further happened in that state, to tarnish the reputation of Wal-Mart.

“Attention Walmart customers: All black people leave the store now.” This was the announcement from a male voice Sunday night in a Wal-Mart store in southern New Jersey. On Wednesday Wal-Mart made profuse apologies over the incident.

After the incident, a manager got on the public address system and immediately apologized. In Bentonville, Arkansas, at the company headquarters, an investigation is under way. It is not yet yet known if it was a rogue employee or a customer.

There have been several past incidents of Black people claiming they have been mistreated at various Wal-Mart stores. Women have also complained about discrimination, while working for Wal-Mart. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) said that Wal-Mart has been making strides in being fair to minorities and Black people.

The reaction of some customers was that it was a horrible thing that happened. Others shrugged it off as a “sick prank.” These things do happen. Chances are that the incident was carried out by a “disgruntled employee.”

A man suffering from sinus cancer and an inoperable brain tumor is doing what he can to support himself. Joseph Casias uses medical marijuana to manage the pain and other symptoms associated with his illness. The 29 year old was recently fired from his long term job as a Wal-Mart associate because of his medical marijuana use.

The young man says he never went to work under the influence nor did he smoke the marijuana while on duty. After five years of employment, he was unexpectedly fired after a drug test revealed the marijuana in his system. The manager of the Wal-Mart store apologized to Casias but said the rules could not be bent, even in a legal use situation.

Wal-Mart spokesperson Greg Rossiter calls the situation “unfortunate” but states, they will not rehire the former associate of the year. Although medical marijuana is legal in fourteen states, there are no laws to protect users from job termination in drug-free companies.

Wal-Mart is just one of many companies that forbid drug use of any kind. Marijuana is still an illegal drug according to federal law. This makes a company liable if any injury occurs on the property at the hands of a medical marijuana user.

In areas of racial tension stupid things tend to happen. An Incident at a Wal Mart store in Washington Township, New Jersey was one of these unexceptable stupid things.

A male voice came over the intercom system of the store stating “Attention Wal Mart customers; All black people leave the store now,” This happened Sunday evening at the Wal Mart in Washington Township. He was very calm when he made the comment.

This was a stunning event at the store and customers and employees were shocked. Management at the store apologized for the incident later.

Wal Mart company spokes person Ashley Hardie stated the incident about black people or any other race is totally unacceptable. The Wal Mart company is looking into the incident and ways to make sure it will not happen again.

This is a legal issue and the authorities are looking into the event. Both the Washington Township police and the Gloucester County Prosecutors Office is investigating the incident.

America is the melting pot of nationalities in the world. It is sad to have people disrupt the freedom this country stands for. We are all Americans in this great nation it is time we start acting like it.
