Facebook To Pay Tribute To The Dead

Facebook has not yet answered all the concerns of the Federal Commissioner for the protection of privacy on the fate of the profile of users who have died.

This week, the social networking site reminded its members that there is a service that can save the profile of a deceased user by creating a memorial at the request of his friends or his family.

Other online reports have suggested that Facebook changed how it handles the accounts of its members after their deaths, but a spokesman for the Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart said Tuesday that the site is nothing new.

In August, Commissioner Stoddart has published a report expressing concerns about how the social networking site dealt with the personal information of its members, including those who die.

Ms. Stoddart said he wants to ensure that users realize that their personal information would remain online even after their death.

Facebook had said then he wanted to update its policy on the protection of privacy and reveal what happens to information when users die, but has still not done.

Edit your profile mode changes its Memorial privacy settings so that the status is no longer updated as details are hidden and only confirmed friends can access.

The site will close the account user if a deceased friend or family member so requests.

Facebook has more than 300 million active users worldwide, including about 12 million in Canada.

Why not have users design and populate their own memorial page before they die and then shut down their main page upon death? Seems like a little planning here would take care of this problem. You can let the users decide when they sign up. Do you want your page to be your memorial or do you want to have a secondary page ready to go so that it’s there when required?

My son recently died and unfortunately the page was memorialized by Facebook. This has led to a lot of sadness and anger on the part of many that are trying to view his original page as part of their greif process. There was some very insightful and moving information on his site and now it is gone forever. Shame on Facebook for doing this
