Bell Mobility made news when they were announced as a major sponsor of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. They have made nontrivial progress in developing and upgrading their wireless networks to be able to handle enormous video streaming demands.
Now they have gone one step further. Bell Mobility has announced a brand new mobile device, the Samsung OMNIA II, will be the Official Smart Phone of the 2010 Olympics.
The OMNIA II has a 3.7 inch touchscreen display, a 5-megapixel camera, built-in WIFI, as well as a free software application that will display real-time events as they unfold during the Olympics. It also sports an impressive collection of Java utilities. Using Java, it allows you to edit photos and videos directly from the device. It also enables access of files in Word, Excell, and PDF formats.
“Our focus for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games is on linking consumers around the world to the Games using Samsung technology in a way that`s not bee done before,” said Paul Brannen, General Manager, Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics Canada. “Samsung will connect fans through its WOW technology, mobile phones and website to enable people to share and celebrate their favourite Olympic `WOW` moments with friends and family.”
Making the OMNIA II the Official Olympic Smart Phone is a logical step for Bell. Developing a video network that fully embraces Internet Video Streaming, as well as supporting a Smart Phone with live feeds from the Olympic events will only bolster Bell’s investments in future technologies.
Bell Mobility Makes The amsung OMNIA II Offical Olympic Phone

I live in Manitoba. I’ve tried to buy this phone from Bell as it is advertised on the net. Originally I was advised that I could pay the money and would get the phone along with the promotional plan for cell telephone and internet wireless service. The Rep on the phone said that the Bell Mobility associate service provider is Telus here in Winnipeg. The next day I called Telus here in Winnipeg near my home. They advised that Bell does not have 3g internet capability in Winnipeg. I called Bell, who said that they do have this service. I called another Telus store who said that the cell phone and 3g wireless work, but the 3g internet capability is restricted to Winnipeg only.
I called the supervisor of the original contact at Bell and was told that the originally called Telus rep was wrong and that indeed Bell has the said service in Winnipeg.
I waited a day. When I called Bell through the number in the information on the original web site, and asked them if they could sell me the phone and set me up through Telus.
The person I spoke with said that they could get me the phone for $50.00 off the original price and set up the plan requested. When asked to verify the features of the plan and call me back in 15 minutes, the rep never called me back.
I called Bell Mobility directly and spoke to a third person, who said that it is impossible to get the internet component of the Canadian cellular service of Bell Mobility that is offered on the internet, in Manitoba! What is even more shocking, this person contradicted what the second person I spoke with said, “It is not Telus who is affiliated or associated with Bell Mobility in Winnipeg, but rather, The Manitoba Telephone System, MTS who provides the telephone service, but is unable to process the 3g internet.â€
MTS here in Winnipeg deny this.
All of the above transpired over a two week period. I have all of the names of all parties spoken to and what was said by whom.
What does it take to become a customer? The last person spoken to suggested that I could go to Ontario or British Columbia and get the phone there, but would have to accept the fact that I would then permanently have along distance number and be subject to long distance charges on every call.
One of the main factors necessitating the use of a cell phone for me, is the fact that I am clinically totally disabled. It takes a week or more to negotiate a ride from our “Handi-Transit,” our local handicap transport bus service. It would take a year or more to negotiate and fund an aided trip to the locations the telephone rep recommended to get a long distance cell phone contract.
I’m at my wit’s end. After finally securing the funding for such a phone, over a two month period, since even before the expiry of my last three year term of a 20 year relationship with MTS, and now it is even cheaper… and I cannot get it!?
Please help me.
