Rogers HTC Dream Turned Nightmare

The Rogers HTC Dream has had a tumultuous beginning to 2010. It began when Rogers Wireless chose not to upgrade the HTC to Android 2.0. Instead they offered existing customers a limited time promotion where they could switch free of charge to the HTC Magic.

The controversy surrounding the HTC Dream took a new turn when Rogers removed all HTC Dream phones from store shelves and issued a warning by way of text message informing customers of a software problem that prevents 911 calls from completing if the GPS receiver is enabled.

Rogers reported that they are expediting a software fix (an upgrade to the Android 1.5 Operating System) that will correct the issue, as well as provide several other improvements. Rogers requested that in the meantime all customers turn off the GPS receiver until further notice so that all 911 emergency calls complete.

In order to disable the GPS receiver on the HTC Dream follow these steps:

1. Press the Menu button.
2. Select Settings
3. Select Location
4. Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite

The Rogers HTC is the only device affected by this problem. Some Rogers’ customers reported not receiving the text message warning and others that they are not experiencing the issue. No one has confirmed the validity of these claims.

    Typical rogers bullshit.

Upgrade from a Dream to a Magic? No thanks. After months of getting the runaround from them regarding software upgrades, this is a pathetic fix. They had removed the soft keyboard from the Dream, installed a bunch of crap Rogers apps, disabled the automatic OS updates…I got fed up with their bs and just rooted the phone and installed a Cyanogen mod. It’s never been better. My Dream is now faster, more stable, and I have 1.6 with voice search, 5 homescreens. Canadian Dream owners should root their phones, you won’t regret it!

Hey man can you tell me where you found the walkthrough to root the rogers dream? I attempted it but almost bricked my phone when it got stuck on the rogers screen… any input would be amazing!

It should be noted that the set of circumstances that will cause a 911 call to fail is more more elaborate than simply having the GPS turned on. Turning it off, merely prevents the problem.

The GPS is not the cause of the problem in itself. Turning it off is the solution.

C’mon WIND mobile, you’ll be the savior of all these people, whether directly or indirectly. We need the competition to take away the sorry manner in which the big three (Bell,Rogers,Telus) treat their customers! With another provider the present group will either smarten up or go away, it’s in there park now!

  5. Thank you again, CRTC says:

Want to know why you pay more than twice more for cellular than south of the border? Ask the CRTC–they are the ones who stifle competition and censor content.

    The CRTC bleats “Canadian culture”;
    Canadians say: baa baa

  6. Sandi says:

There is nothing as far as I can tell on Roger’s website. Roger’s solution to this issue please.

  7. Screw the CRTC says:

Its not just cellular service, it’s also Internet, and home phone service we are getting screwed over on, too. When you consider the service provided, or better yet “available”, we are paying mote than DOUBLE, yes DOUBLE for communication service in Canada.
Example:, myself, I have one of the highest bandwidth that is “available” for residential service. It is “rated” at “up to” 25 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload. 69.99 a month, and I have never gotten ant better than 6 Mbps download, and 900 Kbps on uplaod. A good friend in New Jersey, on Comcast, gets, on a daily basis, 16 Mbps download, and 6 Mbps on upload, all for 39.99 a month. Competition?, we have none in Canada. We have 2 dictators, Rogers and Bell.

  8. Greg says:

I had thought about getting an HTC phone, but I went with the Blackberry instead. Very happy with the decision, especially in light of these findings.

  9. Ronaldo says:

Hope that Rogers is reading these – Iwill be gone from thier grasp as soon as my ‘contract’ runs out and they will never see my money again! What a poorly run outfit!

  10. Mike says:

People actually bought an HTC phone? Frankly, you all deserve what you get. Customers will ALWAYS blame the mobile provider they are with. The first day Wind launched their site was overrun with whiners claiming Wind failed to meet their “expectations.” Canadians want free phones and $10 a month with unlimited everything….it’s not going to happen.

LOL, you’re comparing to Comcast? My US friends are envious of my FibreOP connection.

Ever tried to play World of Warcraft on Comcast? Good luck with that. They give you high burst downloads, but their connections are totally unstable and prone to massive lag bursts in prime time. If that’s the kind of Internet you want, you’re welcome to it.
