All the Rage on Facebook: Urban Dictionary Names

In honor of what’s been dubbed “Urban Dictionary Week” on Facebook, a new trend has popped up that has users giggling over user-created definitions of their names. Users are updating their Facebook status with quotes from the results returned from searching for their name on Urban Dictionary.

Urban Dictionary is a user-supplemented dictionary on the web for more than 4,000,000 slang words and phrases. Entries range from definitions of emoticons (digital smiley faces) and street slang to sexual definitions and everything in between. Because Urban Dictionary’s entries and definitions are supplied by users, names found on the site are rarely defined by true etymology or actual name meanings.

Urban Dictionary’s page on Facebook spurred on this trend Tuesday night by posting the idea and asking Facebook users to participate and ask their friends to play along. This viral game brings a flood of users who may otherwise not have visited the Urban Dictionary website.

Prior to posting their Urban Dictionary names as status updates, Facebook users have been posting their bra colors and announcing their celebrity look-alikes in status updates. This is definitely not the first bandwagon that Facebook users have jumped on, and it surely won’t be the last.
