Former Vice President Dick Cheney says the Bush administration’s focus on Iraq did not lead to the disintegration of Afghanistan, in an interview with Politico Monday.
In a 90-minute interview Cheney said Obama’s “agonizing” about Afghanistan strategy “has consequences for your forces in the field.”
“I begin to get nervous when I see the commander in chief making decisions apparently for what I would describe as small ‘p’ political reasons, where he’s trying to balance off different competing groups in society,” Cheney said.
“Every time he delays, defers, debates, changes his position, it begins to raise questions: Is the commander in chief really behind what they’ve been asked to do?”
On Tuesday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer took aim at Dick Cheney’s comments.
“Here’s a guy without much experience, who campaigned against much of what we put in place … and who now travels around the world apologizing,” Cheney told the newspaper. “I think our adversaries — especially when that’s preceded by a deep bow … — see that as a sign of weakness.”
“Frankly, they turned tail,” Hoyer responded. “I get pretty angry when I hear the vice president talk about something they didn’t finish.”

Hey Mike, It’s curious to me that you keep harping on the fact that Obama didn’t serve in the military while apparently ignoring the fact that Cheney got defements time and again during Vietnam. I’m interested in how you reconcile this position? I never held it against Cheney for not wanting to go but I never could figure out how he then claimed that he “supported” that war. He seems pretty brave when it comes to risking other peoples lives. As far as Obama taking time to make a decision things like the Afghan elections and the legitimacy of the government we’re working with have to be considered. If all you want if for Obama to send more troops over there, he already increased our numbers by 10,000 some time ago.

Bush & Cheney completely side-tracked the main issue, after the hi-jacking of those planes with the horrible & tragic loss of so many wonderful Americans. Those of us who live in the NYC area & surrounding communities, including NJ, will NEVER forget. My husband & I walked the streets around ground zero right afterward. It was like the movie Schindlers List. Everything had a wierd beige/grey ash-like, film covering it. Then we saw a red rose someone had laid on an NYPD police car that was parked on a side street a block away, with its windows blown out, that ash covering it. It was surreal. I received nine awards for valor while serving in the Army in Viet Nam. Shooting people is not the way, thank goodnes our president is not quick to follow the advice of generals. General Westmoreland ask former President Johnson for 50,000 more soldiers and got them to what avail. Remember senior soldiers always need soldiers to command and for their jobs.
