Fugitive Plastic Surgoen Apprehended In Italy

Dr. Mark Weinberger, wanted for healthcare fraud charges in the United States, has been arrested by Italian police after five years on the run.

Weinberger, also known as the “nose doctor,” was arrested on Tuesday in the Italian Alps.

“We had some suspicions and heard about some strange behaviors,” recounted Lt. Col. Guido Di Vita, who heads the Aosta division of the Italian Carabinieri, the nation’s military police. Di Vita said Weinberger told people he was leaving to hike in the mountains, but never returned. Aosta is situated at the foot of famed Mt. Blanc.

Weinberger, included on the US Most Wanted List, was found living in a tent on the side of Mount Blanc.

Acting U.S. attorney for Indiana’s Northern District David Capp said Thursday extradition may take as long as a year.

In the time since his disappearance, his wife filed for divorce, his surgical center was auctioned off, the yacht was sold by the bank named on the loan, and all of Weinberger’s assets were seized by creditors and mortgage companies.

Weinberger, 46, reportedly stabbed himself in the next when he realized he was being arrested.
