CNN’s Sanjay Gupta Operates On Haiti Earthquake Victim

A medical correspondent for CNN and practising neurosurgeon, Sanjay Gupta, operated on a 12-year-old Haitian girl who was on a US military ship.

Last Saturday, Dr. Sanjay Gupta was the only doctor left at a field hospital to help 25 victims of the earthquake.

The night before the other doctors and nurses of the medical team from Belgian left due to security concerns. Gupta continued to stay night with other CNN employees, security workers and a Haitian nurse.

The girl, her name unknown, was injured in last week’s earthquake and had a 1.2 cm piece of concrete lodged in her skull and needed brain surgery.

The surgeon on board the ship called for a neurosurgeon and with a CNN producer’s help, they called CNN in Atlanta.

The team in Atlanta then talked with Dr. Gupta in Port-au-Prince. Gupta, along with Los Angeles surgeon Henri Ford and the ship’s surgeon’ Kathryn Berndt, performed the much needed brain surgery on the little girl.

A second surgery was needed to remove a small piece of debris in the girls brain that could not be removed by the medical team the first time. It has been reported that the girl is expected to recover fully.
