Churches across east Texas have been torched as the result of arson, authorities say. The fires began New Year’s Day, and the latest occurred February 8th, when the arsonist hit both Dover Baptist and Clear Spring Missionary Baptist Church within just two hours’ time.
Damage from the fires has reportedly cost property owners millions of dollars, and churchgoers across east Texas are being forced to find new places to worship. Unsure of the arsonist’s motive, local, state, and federal authorities fear the rampage shows no sign of stopping or slowing down.
There is no consensus yet on whether or not the fires are the work of a lone wolf, or if multiple arsonists are involved.
Some churches have been completely destroyed in the string of blazes, but not all have been burnt to the ground. The fire at Grace Community Church last month, for example, spared sections on the building such as the church office and gym.
Investigators for the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms have raised the reward for information leading to the arsonist or group of arsonists’ arrest and conviction to $25,000. Fortunately, no one has been hurt in any of the blazes so far.
