Judge Hands Down Sentence To Jayson Williams

Jayson Williams, a former NJ Nets, was on trail for his role in the shooting of his limo driver, Costas “Gus” Christofi, back in 2002. Williams was sentenced Tuesday (February 23, 2010) mourning to five years and must serve a minimum of eight-teen months before he will be eligible for parole.

Williams agreed to a plea deal last month, that Judge Edward Coleman accepted. Part of the deal was Williams had to plea guilty and the state change the charges from reckless manslaughter down to aggravated assault.

After Williams was sentence, he turned to family tearfully and said “Forgive me for the pain I have caused. You deserve a better father, brother, son than I have been.” Williams said, ” From my heart there’s not a day I don’t wake up and feel sorry for what I did to Mr. Christofi.”

Williams is schedule to be transported to a facility in Trenton. Then, authorities will decide on a location for Williams to spend the rest of sentence.

With drunk driving and crashing his SUV in Manhattan, Judge Coleman told Williams that he blames alcohol “for you being here today.”

Williams said, “I’m not a bad man, but I acted badly.”
