The statue of a ten year-old Barack Obama that was removed from an Indonesian public park has been relocated. The statue is now at a school in Jakarta that President Obama went to as a child. The statue was placed at the school one week after it was removed from the park. It features a young Obama smiling at a butterfly on his hand.
In December 2009, the bronze statue was erected in Menteng Park in Jakarta. However, the statue was taken down after locals campaigned to have it removed because they felt Obama did not deserve the honor of a statue in their park. Obama was once an important figure to the Indonesians, but has lost popularity over recent months. A Facebook group supporting the statue’s removal from the park attracted over 50,000 followers.
The State Elementary School 01 Menteng was where Obama had once attended school. The statue of the President as a young boy has been relocated to the primary school’s front yard. The headmaster of the school, Akhmad Solikhin, said, “It is better if the statue can be placed here, so it will be an inspiration and motivation for students to reach their dreams, like Obama.”
