Chile Faces Volunteer Fatigue

The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked the foundation of Chile could not have come at a worse time in terms of volunteers and donors.

The efforts to pull Chile out of the wreckage that the massive earthquake produced Saturday are small compared to those of Haiti. Some say this is because it comes on the heels of the relief efforts in Haiti. Also up against the efforts is the timing economically; it comes in a time of economic stress.

Chris Nind, director of development and community relations for Collier’s Salvation Army said that his chapter had received fewer phone calls following Saturday’s earthquake compared to those after Haiti’s earthquake.

According to its website The American Red Cross, which raised more than $250 million for Haitian recovery efforts, has committed an initial $50,000 to Chile relief.

That is not to say that nothing is being done for Chile, Tuesday the Singapore Government announced that they will contribute $50,000 to efforts; Cannon Group announced that same day that they have pledged approximately $168,000. There are also reports of churches beginning to step up.

Nind believes that more monetary and time donations will take place once people begin to see the coverage of Chili and the human element involved.
