American missionary Laura Silsby still remains imprisoned in Haiti after being arrested on kidnapping charges after the country’s massive earthquake.
Silsby is one of ten missionaries that visited the country and was arrested for trying to escort a group of 33 Haitian children out of the country.
The group claims to have been helping the children, believing that they had all lost their parents during the earthquake. Nine of the ten missionaries were released by the Haitian authorities. Although the other missionaries have been released, Silby faces charges of “organizing irregular trips”, which violates a 1980 Haitian mandate.
The group was trying to move the children from Haiti to an orphanage that they were setting up in the Dominican Republic.
The group, which are members of a Baptist church in Idaho, went to the grief stricken Haiti sometime after the January 12 earthquake. The earthquake hit an astonishing 7.0 magnitude near the capital city of Port-au-Prince. An estimated 250,000 to 300,000 died as a result of the earthquake. The devastation wounded an estimated 32,000 people while a staggering 1 million people are estimated have been and to still remain homeless.
Silsby faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
