Facebook made headlines when it announced it would purchase the popular picture sharing Instagram for the whopping sum of $1 billion.
But before the ink is dry on that deal, Facebook has already launched its own photo sharing program called Facebook Camera, an app that allows for sharing, editing and filtering photos.
Unlike Instagram, multiple photos can be uploaded at the same time using the Facebook Camera app.
Sources contend that Facebook’s new camera program won’t compete with Instagram and was developed totally independently in-house at Facebook. It will target the vast audience of more than 850 million Facebook users who are not part of the 40-million Instagram family.
Still, many are confused as to why Facebook would purchase a program extremely similar to one that it had already developed on its own.
A spokesman for Facebook would only say that the new Facebook Camera would likely provide “healthy competition” for the Instagram app.
The app, which is available to download from the App Store now.
