Saudi Arabia To Build “Women-Only” City

The government of Saudi Arabia recently announced its plans to build a “women-only” city in the hopes of creating jobs and attracting younger women to the national workforce.

The country’s strict laws do not forbid women from holding jobs in the public or private sector, but it is estimated that less than fifteen percent of all of those employed in the country are female. Few companies within the country are owned and operated by women, but such a city would allow for women to develop careers and other important business and socialization skills.

“The city is distinguished from other industrial cities for its proximity to residential neighborhoods to facilitate the movement of women to and from the workplace. It is also characterized by allocating sections equipped for women workers in environment and working conditions consistent with the privacy of women according to Islamic guidelines and regulations,” according to a statement from the Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon).

According to Asian News International (ANI), the municipality will be built in the Eastern Province city of Hofuf. If the city becomes a success, other locations will be created.

Women only recently won the right to participate in Olympic athletic events and to vote in certain government elections beginning in 2015, but are still not granted driving privileges.

It is expected that most businesses within the city will involve food processing, textile production, or pharmaceutical manufacturing.

‘I’m sure that women can demonstrate their efficiency in many aspects and clarify the industries that best suits their interests, their nature and their ability’, Modon’s deputy director-general, Saleh Al-Rasheed, told Saudi daily newspaper al-Eqtisadiah.

The Post reports, the development is expected to attract 500 million riyals (about $133 million) in investments and create nearly 5,000 jobs.

Where is United Nation and human right societies to look into this. Of course, oil countries are exception for now,

What kind of idiotic **** is this??????????? It is still segregation, discrimination and subserviance at it’s polarized best!!!!!!! These guys need to get over themselves- the saudi men are nothing special. The UN should not have ot look into stupid stuff such as this……….it should be managed by Western countries not buying thier gas and oil.

  3. Islam is nothing more than a totalitarian fascist ideology that promotes hate & violence towards non muslims and robs women of respect, dignity & freedoms.

    • Shame on you!
I t is a religion from GOD, You have to behave and learn how to respect others.

      DO NOT BE RACIST!!!!

    • What proof do you have against the Muslims that they and only they create hate & violence towards non-Muslims, go out and get your facts straight and then talk about other peoples Religion! People like you are “Prejudice”, who don’t “know” anything and talk ****! Everybody (non-Muslims) are against Muslims because they know our religion is TRUE and and where not scared of “death”, no matter what!!

      • This is NOT about religion; there are many ignorant comments here ‘sticking it’ to the religion, culture, etc. The fact is, no matter what your beliefs are, if a human being is being mistreated, it needs to stop. That’s it! It doesn’t matter about the religion, oil, or other ridiculous things posted here. Women are human beings and are being mistreated in every possible way, in countless countries. We live in a society that has gone through sufferage, feminism, etc. ( we are very lucky). However, that is not simply a cultural trend. It is a realization of freedom for a group of enslaved humans; Women. And more needs to be done. We cannot turn a blind eye to mistreated people and say, “Well, none of my business, it’s what they believe, religion you know…”

We have to understand the religion and culture of Saudi Arabia. We can’t compare our culture with their culture. I can understand it might look awaked for people live in west but if it is ok for Saudi people why bother commenting so negatively. Here is my question. How many of you didn’t like this decision and ever visited to Saudi Arabia. It is their religion, culture and tradition.

    • Kehoah on said:

I wouldn’t visit there in the first place- I like to have a drink now and then; secondly my Christian God says everyone is equal and that is why YOU are probably living the in North America. We are always asked to understand you guys, but you guys never try to understand us – you just keep pushing your religion which is a facade for violence and repression………….you all need to go back home and stay there.

      • Dear Kehoah,

While I respect your right to having an opinion, I have to say that what you wrote is far from the actual truth. You say we are asked to understand Muslims or Islam, yet they never try to understand us. They are not the ones inforcing their ideologies on us, it is quite the opposite. Islam doesn’t have armies all over the world, inforcing Sharia Law. Yet the U.S has a military base on almost every nation on earth, and it is the west which is inforcing, by way of violence(US army, Drones, Helicopters…) its ideology of “Democracy”. Read MAdeleine Bunting’s writings, in “Intolerant Liberalism” published in “The Guardian” on October 8th 2001.

Educate youself instead of blindly following mass media opinions.

        Sincerely,

        NAj

It is unreasonable to ask people to tolerate intolerance. Respecting another culture should not extend to the blatant discrimination and disrespect of groups within that culture. Equal opportunities for all.

    Dar Muhammad,

How interesting for you to tell us to respect the culture, religion and tradition. Have you done that? Or have you choosen to assimilate into North American culture? Do not throw a stone when you live in a glass house. Women in Saudi Arabia are valued no greater than rats. I, for one will fight to make sure all people that are oppressed are spoken for, regardless of whether they are women or men. In Canada we do not throw our daughters into sacks with bricks and put them in a pool to drown just for some ridiculus infraction. That is called being civilized.

    • Muhammad Ali on said:

What do you know about Islam? Did you read the Quran or have the basic knowledge about the religion. It is not fair you read some store not even aware about the entire reason behind it. We have not even confirmed the story and its source but yes jump to the conclusion and blame the religion. So I request respectfully do not go so far and make that kind of statements.

  8. Why, perhaps there should be a city with certain “uncontrollable” men in it so they don’t need to interfere with the natural state that is human interaction. What a failure…

  9. Really!!!! A Saudi city for Women only? Is there going to be a particular age that will allow these women to live in this city? Will the women build their own companies? Are women in Saudi so brilliant that the men must separate them from themselves for fear of being failures? Religion, perhaps, is not the only reason. Like in America – we are learning women are becoming more powerful, productive and leaders because there are more women than men alive and women can multitask much better than men.
Money, oil, and power – can this Saudi city for Women give them the opportunity to gain freedom? Because women will be heard, women will be talking; women will have a presence, become a force and attain liberty. Knowledge is power.

  10. This is disgusting!!! But, it does not represent the majority of the followers of Islam. This is just a group of “orthodox” muslims that use religion to control people (not only women). I am sad that these are the bad apples that make the majority of non muslims think badly about this religion.

  12. You all need to stop barking and criticizing what other countries do to run their country. Its their country and they run it and can make any rules. Go ask a saudi woman if she is happy or no and the answer will be she is happy with the law.. Stop asking CNN BBC FOX NEWS etc how they feel about women.. Go ask a Muslim women how she feels. You just want all women to get naked on the street like your own women and then they get raped and give birth to an unlawful child. Have you ever heard of women being raped in saudi arabia ? but in your western countries ever 3 second a woman being raped. GET A LIFE and stop thinking about others. THINK ABOUT YOUR OWNSELF AND COUNTRY where ppl are being shot everyday now… WHY ? because you guys are mentally ILL

  13. Dear readers,

What freedom do you speak of???!!!

We have freedom in North america, as long as we don’t defy the System. Have any of you ever stood up against the system when something happened that directly impacted your way of life?! NO! Because you can’t. You seem to forget that your “Freedom” is an ideology, that was forced on the First nations. They were robbed of their culture, heritage and language. THe first nations language isnt written, you know why, because their intellectuals were slaughtered. Your ignorance is your strength, Your strenght is your unified cowardice!

Educate yourselves, and become individuals as opposed of being cattle!

  14. PS. i know you will pick on my english so for your info english is not my first language AND I AM GLAD ITS NOT!!

  15. Ten Obvious Reasons Why
Islam is NOT a Religion of Peace

#1 18,000 deadly terror attacks committed explicitly in the name of Islam in just the last ten years. (Other religions combined for perhaps a dozen or so).

#2 Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, had people killed for insulting him or for criticizing his religion. This included women. Muslims are told to emulate the example of Muhammad.

    #3
Muhammad said in many places that he has been “ordered by Allah to fight men until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is his messenger.” In the last nine years of his life, he ordered no less than 65 military campaigns to do exactly that.

Muhammad inspired his men to war with the basest of motives, using captured loot, sex and a gluttonous paradise as incentives. He beheaded captives, enslaved children and raped women captured in battle. Again, Muslims are told to emulate the example of Muhammad.

    #4
After Muhammad died, the people who lived with him and knew his religion best immediately fell into war with each other.

Fatima, Muhammad’s favorite daughter, survived the early years among the unbelievers at Mecca safe and sound, yet died of stress from the persecution of fellow Muslims only six months after her father died. She even miscarried Muhammad’s grandchild after having her ribs broken by the man who became the second caliph.

Fatima’s husband Ali, who was the second convert to Islam and was raised like a son to Muhammad, fought a civil war against an army raised by Aisha, Muhammad’s favorite wife – and one whom he had said was a “perfect woman.” 10,000 Muslims were killed in a single battle waged less than 25 years after Muhammad’s death.

Three of the first four Muslim rulers (caliphs) were murdered. All of them were among Muhammad’s closest companions. The third caliph was killed by allies of the son of the first (who was murdered by the fifth caliph a few years later, then wrapped in the skin of a dead donkey and burned). The fourth caliph (Ali) was stabbed to death after a bitter dispute with the fifth. The fifth caliph went on to poison one of Muhammad’s two favorite grandsons. The other grandson was later beheaded by the sixth caliph.

The infighting and power struggles between Muhammad’s family members, closest companions and their children only intensified with time. Within 50 short years of Muhammad’s death, even the Kaaba, which had stood for centuries under pagan religion, lay in ruins from internal Muslim war…

And that’s just the fate of those within the house of Islam!

#5 Muhammad directed Muslims to wage war on other religions and bring them under submission to Islam. Within the first few decades following his death, his Arabian companions invaded and conquered Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and Zoroastrian lands.
A mere 25 years after Muhammad’s death, Muslim armies had captured land and people within the borders of over 28 modern countries outside of Saudi Arabia.

    #6
Muslims continued their Jihad against other religions for 1400 years, checked only by the ability of non-Muslims to defend themselves. To this day, not a week goes by that Islamic fundamentalists do not attempt to kill Christians, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists explicitly in the name of Allah.

None of these other religions are at war with each other.

#7 Islam is the only religion that has to retain its membership by threatening to kill anyone who leaves. This is according to the example set by Muhammad.

#8 Islam teaches that non-Muslims are less than fully human. Muhammad said that Muslims can be put to death for murder, but that a Muslim could never be put to death for killing a non-Muslim.

    #9

The Qur’an never once speaks of Allah’s love for non-Muslims, but it speaks of Allah’s cruelty toward and hatred of non-Muslims more than 500 times.

    • Well oil is power. An if you have it you could do what you want until you don’t have it. So we will see what the future brings when the resources have being depleted and see if people remain with any religious belief. An therefore the time will come to see how we evolved with better understanding of our fellow human beings. So the holy Quran is a guide for the human race. But it also has the stories of the prophets before the last messenger. The same ones that were written in The Torah and in the Gospel. It understandable that we see thinks differently and also read and comprehend stuff also differently and therefore make judgement as if we are God and therefore we see all sides of the whole story. That what Egyptian king Pharaoh believe he was a God that build monuments to show the power that he wheeled over and conquer over different races. An force there races to accept there belief in there God like idols. Do know that in Canada that religion of Christianity was forced upon that First nation kids that sending to schools that abused them to accept the faith. So we all have to look in our borders to solve our problems for a better Canada for future generations and to reduce the large population of aboriginals in our jails as well as the high suicide rates of aboriginal women and also the large number of unsolved murders of aboriginal women.

  17. Dont mix culture with religion, it is no where said in islam that women cant work. The sheikh’s running that country need to educate themselves starting with their own religion. Its sad to see men using religion to further their own interests.

  20. stupid pervert sheikhs that all they care about is sex , sleep, and plesurre , and they buy human right with oil money …, womens should stand up for their rights in ksa

  21. no matter what closed-brains and backward people think…
    Islam rocks..
It is the only religion that is nowadays being compared with man-made laws.. others are not even close to be comparable with this modernization…
Islam has every single thing defined it… the only religion with comprehensive BOOK
closed-brain is the right word.. as i have not seen anyone talking bad about islam after studying Quran (islamic book) they talk **** by mixing culture with religion.
sad somebody needs to goto school to learn differences between culture, religion and civil laws…
If saudi Goverment does something that may not be written in Islamic Book.. and could be just a civil order nothing to do with Islam…
Again if they do something as cultural practice that may not be islamic..
Go…. do the reading before commenting like jerks with no knowledge..

    • Please Show us the teaching of Islam, there, might be some cultural spices added to Quran, but if you really read your so called holy book and would not be so brain washed and fanatic about it, then you would realize that in most part of that book, moslems are encouraged to kill none moslem men, take their belongings even their wives and children . the right of woman is half of a man, and as a witness two women is equal to a man, i can go on and on.
Also could you please let us know , why all Islamic countries are in all kind of problems? look at Syria, Iran, Yemen, list goes on.

      • Poor Zia…. sadly your nick or name dint help much to you with some Zia (light)
As I said.. go read the word of God i.e. book (Quran) then come and tell us about Islam.. you certainly need it..
As I said less knowledge is disastrous in serious matters… as that is the point when you start thinking absurd about Islam.. without knowing it.. SAD
You don’t even know that in 2012 there is NO country in this world running with Islamic pure Islamic teachings and laws. Its same as there is NO country with 100% Christian laws…

So this was the answer for your insane assumptions about Islamic laws and country… half of the Islamic countries are running with the 18th century outdated law-books from Europe, which were given to them for running colonies not equal and balanced societies…
Why All Islamic countries have problems?
They were captured and taken back to the dark ages where Europeans were before 16th century…. India is best example which was one of the richest nation in the world when it was ruled by MUSLIMS and when brits left after around 200years sub-continent was a bunch of poor struggling nations.. it took India more than 50years to recover lil bit others are on the way.. Turkey had more than 70years of recovery… African nations were poor but very well cultured when they were slaved and captured… their recovery will take more than others….. so this horrible colonial time left its issues with them.. They taught them to act the way they are doing it now.. but improvement is on its way… it’s a process of recovery.. it will take its own time.. we should help them educating and learning about heir rights and developments… as we have more knowledge and prosperity…
Now abut Killings and punishments.. you might donno about laws…. ANY law in this world is not completed without punishments.. if you cross red-light there is a charge written in law-books.. if you kill someone there is a charge written in our western LAW books .. yet we don’t start calling our constitutions brutal or inhuman.. similarly Quran is the code of life same as we have constitution.. It has well-defined ways mentioned and yes some punishments too for the wrong doers and for those who get involved in killing or doing bad stuff with innocents and poors.
Associating killings with Islam is again LACK of knowledge… few involved people are might be calling themselves Muslims… but that’s not what Islam is…
How about Christian people being involved in sweeping millions of Muslims from Spain?? How about WWI & II?? What happened with Jews in German? Who did the only atomic bomb attack?? List goes on? Yet we don’t start calling their religion same as you do with Islam??? Muslims can never do that because they love Prophet Jesus more than Christians and they can’t blame his teachings ever…. These cruel acts were not from Jesus teachings.…

Anyways… You surely need ZIA (the light):P
        )

        • I do have a name that means light and I chose that because I am enlightened and don’t ever want to be a fanatic Moslem (brain washed) nor to be named a Moslem, You are comparing your so called godly laws with of the manmade laws of world, there should be a difference between those two, which a laws from God must be more fair and humane. Can you tell us that stoning to death or beheading or beating your wife or in a war taking the enemies wives and children as a gift, can be consider as Godly laws?
Most of you, Moslems say that this is not Islamic law and some people use Islam and many other excuses, tell me why if a Muslim converts from Islam should be killed? Or why a none Muslim has to be forced to become a Muslim or why you can marry a 9 year old child (like your profit did)? Why two women are equal to a man?
I am talking with first-hand knowledge, I have seen what Muslims do to others, and I have been tortured by the hands of Muslims for 2 years, only reason, not being Muslim and not wanting to be a Muslim.
They also wanted to force their religion on me, so please look at Islam with no fanatic views and then talk. Also could you explain which Islam is the true one? Islam has 72 branches, no wonder why they kill each other too!!!
I hope that the light of honesty will illumine the dark heart of yours.

        • Odee, I am not making it up, just read with being a fenatic Muslim and if you want the verses of Quran that talks about violence and incorrages to be violent towards none Muslims, I will provid you with all 109 of them.
The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers for the sake of Islamic rule. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called ‘hypocrites’ and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

Unlike nearly all of the Old Testament verses of violence, the verses of violence in the Quran are mostly open-ended, meaning that they are not restrained by the historical context of the surrounding text. They are part of the eternal, unchanging word of Allah, and just as relevant or subjective as anything else in the Quran.

Most of today’s Muslims exercise a personal choice to interpret their holy book’s many calls to violence according to what their own moral preconceptions find justificable. Apologists cater to their preferences with tenuous arguments that gloss over historical fact and generally do not stand up to scrutiny. Still, it is important to note that the problem is not bad people, but bad ideology.

Unfortunately, there are very few verses of tolerance and peace to abrogate or even balance out the many that call for nonbelievers to be fought and subdued until they either accept humiliation, convert to Islam, or are killed. Muhammad’s own martial legacy – and that of his companions – along with the remarkable stress on violence found in the Quran have produced a trail of blood and tears across world history.

I can see by all the comments that there are a lot of misinformed people out there, there are so many different sects of Muslims out there that the treatment of women is different in everyone of them depending on how the koran was interpreted by tribal elders 100′s of years ago. These different sects hate each other and should be segregated. As Christians who believe in a god, we have progressed and live alongside each other, this will never happen in the muslim faith. The one thing that most muslims do,whatever the sect is not support communities but take whatever they can,did you see any at the Olympics? millions of people and not one Sikh or muslim could be seen, ever seen one at a football game, baseball game, soccer game, basketball, hockey etc etc.As far as I am concerned us Christians should ignore these people and acknowledge only those that want to be part of a community and live happily alongside each other.I would also like to see our governments to stop doing business with those countries that put down women but that will never happen because of the ties the dollar has to middle eastern oil,if it got broke the USA would go broke and inflation would be rampant. If Reagan had not fixed oil to the dollar 40 years ago then maybe muslims would have sorted out their problems and the world would be a better place where everyone is equal and share the same joys in life instead of living a life by religion that is hundreds of years old. There is no place for religion at work or play or in public for that matter, religion should be kept at home and in their place of worship only.

  25. I just read all these comments again for the second time and it appears to me that non Christians treat there religion as if it is the only religion that we should live by.What they do not understand is that life should not be controlled by religion.Life should be enjoyed to the fullest and religion should be practiced only in a place of worship.Living one’s life by religion should be left to the people that try and promote it.If people had open minds they would soon see that all religion is based on how many people it can get into that religion and donate MONEY.The people at the top get rich and the converts pay for it,basically all religions want money. As for a culture, most cultures put women in a different category except for the cultures that have changed with the times. If people in these old cultures start to get educated, using computers etc and see what life is like in our world then it will not be long before they too will want what we have achieved, equality….Look at china,it is changing, look at india,it is changing.Look at other countries that have changed in the last fifty years,it will not be that long before there is change throughout the world,it just takes time.I think that if the arabs educate their women there will be a big change there in the next 20 years, culture can not stop progress to equality.
