Jerry Brown Runs for Govenor of California

The cry of, “Jerry Brown for govenor” has not been heard in California since Jerry Brown held the office of Govenor of California from 1975 to 1983. On Tuesday, the 71-one-year-old Brown announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination. Even though California law sets a limit of just two terms as govenor, Brown is exempt because the law was passed after he was govenor. He is now the state’s attorney general. At this time no other Democrat has entered the race for govenor. California Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger will be leaving office in January after serving two terms.

Both of Mr. Brown’s most likely Republican opponents in November have business backgrounds. Meg Whitman is a former chief executive of eBay Inc. Steve Poizner has ties to Silicon Valley. Both Republicans are 53 years old.

Because “change” is the most recent political buzz word, there are already signs that the Republican Party will try to label Jerry Brown as an insider, a man tainted by the old-style politics of back room deals. While the former govenor will be able to point to his well known reputation for doing what is not politically correct and of coming up with imaginative solutions to difficult problems.
