Obama To Offer New Health Care Proposal

In a last attempt to get bipartisan backing, Democrat sources say President Barack Obama will release a new health reform proposal today that incorporates key Republican talking points like tort reform and health savings accounts into the President’s signature issue.

Senior Democrats are said to frustrated by the President’s shout-out to his opponents at this late date. Many Democrats themselves remain up in the air over the pending legislation.

“Why even bother with the olive branches?” one unnamed source told CNN. “It’s very clear Republicans are not going to provide any votes.”

The health care bill that passed the House last fall squeaked by on only the narrowest of margins. Three of its Democrat supporters are no longer in Congress, and the sole Republican to vote for the bill, Representative Joseph Cao of Louisiana, has announced he is unlikely to support its revision.

Still Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi remained upbeat about the bill’s prospects. “Our members want quality affordable health care for all Americans, and I feel very confident that we will accomplish that,” Pelosi said.

The President will announce his new proposal from the East Room in the White House later this afternoon, with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius standing by his side.
