The Supreme Court has denied a last minute request from conservatives to halt the law making it legal for same-sex couples to legally wed in Washington D.C. As of March 3rd, same-sex couples can begin applying for marriage licenses. D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty signed the law in December, but it had to pass a congressional review before becoming legal.
Couples began lining up for their chance to apply for a license as early as 6 a.m. There is a standard three day waiting period that all couples must adhere to. Same-sex couples will be granted the same rights as heterosexual couples. The courthouse expects around 200 marriage license applications to be filed in the next couple of days. As of this afternoon, they already received 124 applications.
Washington D.C. joins just five other states who have legalized same-sex marriages. California is a prime example of how quickly lawmakers can overturn same-sex marriage laws. The state has been in turmoil after the very short law allowing same-sex marriages was overturned. This is the driving force behind many of the 120 plus couples rushing to get their licenses before the law can be overturned.
Opponents to same-sex marriage laws will keep fighting to have this latest decision overturned.
