California State Senator Arrested for DUI

A California State Senator was arrested early Wednesday morning after an officer noticed his state-issued vehicle swerving and weaving on a busy street.

State Senator Roy Ashburn was charged with one count each of driving under the influence and driving with a blood alcohol level higher than .08% or higher, both misdemeanors. Ashburn, who has a history of taking an anti-gay stand on issues was allegedly driving drunk after leaving Faces, a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento.

Ashburn represents the Southern California counties of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino. He issued a statement after he posted his $1400 bond: “I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.”

Ashburn previously served six years as a California State Assemblyman before his election to the State Senate. A Voting advocate, Project Vote Smart says Ashburn has voted against every gay rights issue since being elected to office.
